Our camp and the entrance to the Potrero

Our camp for the week, with the gate to the Potrero looming in the background. We stayed at a small ranch owned by an enterprising native of Hidalgo named Homero. A couple hundred other climbers were also there, however, most everyone else was camped off to the right around the driveway. It was much quieter in the adjacent field.

El Potrero Chico means "The Little Corral" or something like that in Spanish. It is an oval ring of mountains about 10 miles by 30 miles across. Most of the climbing currently centers on the cliffs visible above. The spire visible halfway up the right side of the gap is the summit of Space Boyz, our big climb of the week. This spire is 1000 feet over the ground. The ridge continues another 2000 feet higher to the summit of El Toro.
