A New Level of Cool
"Shoot to Thrill"
I walk a line I shouldn't walk and I don't just walk, I skip.
I like to make my mama nervous, I like to watch the scales
begin to tip.
Better be careful boy, because I shoot to thrill.

I like to tease, I like to go down under.
I'm gonna make you hurt, I'm gonna make you hunger.
Better be careful boy, because I shoot to thrill.

I like to play with matches in a haystack,
Just to watch you catch your breath.
I'm god's definition of a wild child,
I'm standing heads taller than the rest.
Better be careful boy, because I shoot to thrill.
"Completely"
He says, "Charm school taught me nothing,
College taught me less." And he smiles and winks
and I know he thinks
that I'm talking to the best.
And I smile and play along.
I say thank you when he deigns to like my songs,
but I know this shit he's pulling,
yeah, I've seen this one before.

I've seen stars with smaller egos than you.
I've seen genius packaged more sweetly.
I don't bother asking how you do the things you do
because I'm not won over completely.

He's got movie star good looks
and he knows his every feature. He shakes his head,
and he says,
"I don't know how to reach her."
And I feel a little  dumbfounded,
I don't know what to say,
Till I take a step back and I realize
it wouldn't matter anyway.
"Queen of the 2nd Thought"
For such a clever girl,
she must like the feel of her feet getting shot.
For someone who's got it so together,
that girl sure flakes out a lot.

Call me the queen of the 2nd thought,
you can count on me coming back for something else.
Call me the queen of the 2nd thought,
competant with everything but myself.

I don't think I'm self destructive,
at least not intentionally.
I think the words "self-defeating"
are the better description of me.

If you hear me say good-bye, don't believe it.
I never get out on the first try, I'm never really leaving.
"University Boys"
I know I'm not the first one to wonder
if cool guys are a dying breed.
They're here and there, but they're rare,
'specially at state universities.

The boys in the bars.
$30,000 cars.
The boys who would never ever let me touch their guitars.

I know I'm not the first one to wonder
if there's a guy who can do his own thing.
It's not enough just to cut through the bluff,
then to find those wells of low self-esteem.
