Adina vs. Barbara
Only One Can Win!
Adina’s life had gone from bad to worse after her humiliating beating at the hands of her former boss, Molly. Having expected to be on a job interview, Adina had actually been set-up by Molly, the boss she had arranged to have fired from her previous job. Arranging the interview after hours in the deserted office building, Molly proceeded to pummel Adina, leaving her stripped down to her lingerie. But if that wasn’t bad enough, Molly also threatened that if Adina continued to date Hank, the man both of them had been involved with, she would inflict even more humiliation upon her.
Degraded and scared, Adina hibernated in her apartment for the next week, refusing to answer the phone or the door. Though Hank tried desperately to contact her, Adina would not allow him to do so, and eventually he stopped trying. As a 23 year old native of Pakistan living in America, on her own, with no job or source of income, Adina’s life was in a tailspin. Scared to go outside and in jeopardy of losing her apartment, Adina was completely despondent. But one morning, after retrieving her mail, she came an advertisement in the local newspaper that seemed to jar her out of her funk.

The ad jolted Adina and she began to ponder the possibilities. Though a timid woman, the altercation with Molly had forced her to face some harsh realities. She was a wimp! Molly had manhandled her, forcing her to become a recluse, and she did absolutely nothing about it. In Pakistan, it was not only acceptable, but expected that women were passive and unassertive. But now that she was living in America, it was time to change her attitude about the way she handled herself.
Intrigued by the possibilities, Adina dialed the number and spoke to a man on the other end of the telephone. He asked her a few generic questions, but then went on to provide her with the details of the training. The training lasted six weeks, and during that time she would have to commit to 6 hours per day, 5 days per week. The training would be hard, but at the end of it, she would be stronger, more confident and able to compete for a spot on the federation’s roster. Adina asked for more information, and a few days later, received an application in the mail
When it arrived, she read it over and over. The enclosed brochure included big, glossy pictures of beautiful, strong, confident American women. Those women were exactly what Adina wanted to be so she decided to go ahead and do it. She was out of work anyway, so time was not an issue. The only thing holding her back was the money! Out of work for several months, Adina had exhausted her savings. So there was only one place to turn, so reluctantly, she placed a call to her father back in Pakistan.
The call was one of the most difficult Adina had ever made. Her father was very strict, and though he was happy to send her to an American university for her studies, he had wanted her to return to Pakistan upon graduating. But Adina had other plans and for a couple of years, those plans worked out just fine. Living in America she found a good job, earning a good salary, until her job was eliminated in a cost cutting measure. So to ask her father for money would only open the door for him to demand that she return home. So Adina prepared for those demands, crafting a solid agrument.
The argument would consist of her desire to be independent and prove to herself that she could do it, despite her recent setback. It would also consist of her desire to send money home once she was successful. But the one point she was very careful NOT to include in her argument, was the fact that she needed the money to attend a professional wrestling school. Her father would never agree, so Adina decided not to tell him. She would ask for $10,000, enough to pay for her training as well as allow her some breathing room with her bills. As expected, the conversation was difficult and often heated. But in the end, Adina convinced him to send the money. Once it was in hand, Adina sent in her application, and just a few weeks later, showed up for her first day of training.
As she was warned, the training was difficult. Though a fit 23-year-old woman, the other 2 women in training with her were more athletic, so they adjusted to the rigors of training much more quickly than Adina did. For the first few weeks she spent most of her time being thrown to the mat by just about everyone; instructors and classmates. To make matters worse, the training sessions were followed up by grueling, 1 hour weightlifting sessions, an undertaking Adina had never attempted before in her life.
As a result of the arduous training, for the first 3 weeks Adina arrived home in bad shape. Her body was covered with bruises and her muscles ached so badly that she could barely move. But by the 4th week of training, she finally began to adjust. The muscle aches had begun to subside and slowly but surely, she began to learn how to wrestle. During the last week of the six-week training, Adina had actually accomplished a great deal. Though she still had much to learn as a wrestler, she had learned enough to allow her to get into a ring and not embarrass herself. Her body also showed vast improvement and was now much stronger and more toned. So with only a few days of training left, the owner of the wrestling federation called her into his office.
“So Adina, you’ve shown some pretty good progress. In fact, I’d like to give you the opportunity to earn a spot on our roster. Normally I’d have you wrestle against one of your classmates on our next wrestling card, but one of them is moving away and so not interested in joining us, and the other suffered an injury last night after training and won’t be able to compete for another month or so. But what I’d like to do instead is have you compete against a woman named Barbara who wrestled during our last Amateur Night show. Whoever wins that match will be given a contract. Are you game?”
Adina smiled, overjoyed by the offer.
“YES! I am game!” she replied excitedly.
He then gave her all of the details before she left his office, the realization that she was about to compete for the chance to become a professional lady wrestler finally sinking in. Her emotions over the next couple of weeks ran the gamut of excited anticipation to dread and fear. But once the night arrived, she showed up early to the arena to begin her preparations, still not knowing anything about her upcoming opponent.
At 40-years of age, Barbara, the suburban housewife and soccer mom to her two kids had assumed her dream of becoming a pro wrestler had died. After performing poorly in her audition against a woman named Tiffany, Barbara was nevertheless given a second chance to compete on an Amateur Night Wrestling Show. She trained with pro wrestling veteran Ms. Liberty in order to prepare for the match, but after being pummeled by Flora, there seemed little hope of getting yet another chance. So when the owner of the wrestling federation called her and offered the opportunity to face Adina for a permanent spot on the federation’s roster, Barbara jumped at the chance.
Though she had kept herself in shape physically, Barbara had stopped her wrestling training altogether. So with 3 weeks to go before the match, she immediately placed a call to Ms. Liberty and asked if they could resume their training. Ms. Liberty was happy to hear from Barbara, but with her arm still in a cast from the injury she suffered against Elektra in their last match, she wasn’t able to work with Barbara in the ring. But she still had an idea.
“You know, I have a match that night too. It’s my first title defense of the Veteran’s Division Championship, and I’ll be facing a huge woman named Cocoa. So even though my cast doesn’t come off until next week, maybe we can at least work-out together.” Ms. Liberty suggested.
Though disappointed at not being able to get in the ring for some more training, Barbara accepted the invitation. The two women met at the gym the next day and Barbara and Ms. Liberty began to hit the weights to build up their strength. Though unable to do many of the exercises due to the cast she wore, Ms. Liberty nonetheless worked with Barbara as much as she could. With a week and half to go before the match, Ms. Liberty finally had her cast removed, and the two women hit the mats.
After three sessions, Barbara’s confidence began to build confidence as she became re-acclimated to wrestling. But while Barbara was progressing, Ms. Liberty was feeling differently, and after the third session, sat down and spoke to Barbara about it.
“Listen Barbara, you’re doing great, but I’ve got a championship match coming up and I’ve got to do some training on my own. Cocoa is 5’9” and 275 lbs.! So while our sessions are going well, I really need get ready to face a woman her size. Please don’t take this personally, but our training isn’t really helping me to do that.” Ms. Liberty admitted.
Barbara was silent for a few moments, her pretty face curling into a frown. Ms. Liberty had taught her a great deal, but she knew that still had much to learn. And with only 1a week to go before the match, Barbara was hoping that she Ms. Liberty could teach her more. She got a little angry, but tried not to let it show, instead saying that she understood as the two parted company.
Barbara began to work out even harder, lifting weights and toning her body. She also tried to practice some wrestling maneuvers on her own, but found it difficult and got little value out of it. So as the match approached, her confidence was a bit shaken.
To make matters worse, the day of the match was the start of a typically hectic weekend for Barbara and her family. Her son was in an all-day baseball tournament about 30 miles away, but while her husband was his coach and would take of that, Barbara was left to chauffeur their daughter around to her busy social schedule. The day started by leaving the house at 8:30AM to drive to the soccer fields, which were in the next town.
After dropping her daughter off at the field, Barbara then raced back to the hair salon which was located in her town, where she had scheduled a 9:30 appointment to get her hair done, wanting to look her best for her match. She arrived 20 minutes late, just as her hairdresser had already taken the next woman on the schedule. Barbara sat and waited …. and waited … before finally getting her long, curly-light-brown hair done. She then raced back to the soccer fields where her daughter sat waiting, the game long since over. They grabbed McDonald’s for lunch, eating it in the car as they drove to the high school for her daughter’s 1:00 swim meet. The meet lasted over 3 hours and by the time it was over and her daughter had taken a shower in the locker room, it was almost 5:00 PM. But she wasn’t done yet!
She then had to drive her daughter to the baseball fields and drop her off there so that her husband could take her home. By the time she got there, getting stuck in traffic during the long drive, it was just turning 6:00 PM. She dropped her daughter off, staying to watch a little bit of her sons’ championship game before kissing her husband and heading to the arena. With no babysitter available, Barbara’s husband would not be joining her, so she was on her own tonight.
The arena was located in the city, about 60 miles away from the baseball fields. As Barbara drove, nervously checking her watch, she was frustrated to hit a wall of traffic. Once the traffic finally broke, Barbara grew even more nervous, realizing that she was running out of time. In order to make up for the time lost, she began to drive quickly, but as luck would have it, she was pulled over by a highway cop and given a speeding ticket. Frazzled and frustrated, Barbara rushed into the locker room at 7:50PM, just 10 minutes before the starting time of her match.
Slipping into her green and blue bikini, Barbara noticed her opponent Adina sitting on the opposite end of the locker room, meditating. Adina looked so peaceful and rested as Barbara wiped the sweat from her brow, trying to calm down from all of her rushing around. But before she could, the two women were called to enter the ring. Adina got up and walked calmly toward the door, though her stomach was fluttering with butterflies. She passed by Barbara who was still perspiring, though the haggard housewife still had the decency to wish her luck.
“Good luck to you as well.” Adina replied politely before being lead down the aisle before she climbed up into the ring. Barbara followed just a few seconds later and soon, both women stood in opposite corners of the ring as the announcer grabbed the microphone to begin the evening’s festivities.
”Welcome to another night of Women’s Professional Wrestling! Our first match tonight features two women who will be battling for the right to secure a permanent spot on our roster. In the corner to my right, standing 5’4” tall and weighing 120 lbs. … in her third attempt to become a professional wrestler ….. please welcome back …. BARBARA!”
Barbara raised her arm and waved, the crowd cheering enthusiastically for the bikini-clad soccer mom. The words, “… in her third attempt to become a professional wrestler…” stuck in her head however, and for the first time that day however, she grew nervous about the imminent match. Having spent the day rushing from one place to the next, she never had the opportunity to get nervous, but now, just a few moments away from the start of the match, the reality began to sink in.
“Thid time’s a charm Barbara!” she whispered to herself, trying to psyche herself up. But another contrasting point of view was also swimming in her thoughts as well, though she didn’t say them out loud. “Three strikes you’re out!”
With the bright lights shining down on her, Barbara’s body shimmered, still perspiring from the stress of the hectic day. Her midsection had added a few dimples since the last time she was in the ring, and though still not quite a rock-hard six pack, it nonetheless was evidence of the hard work she put in. Her arms and legs were lithe and toned, though still not quite muscular. Bowing her head as she waited for Adina to be introduced, Barbara stared down at her blue, ankle high wrestling boots for no reason other than to give her something to distract her.
”Her opponent tonight, standing 5’5” and weighing 135 lbs., the most recent graduate of our training school … please welcome in her first match …. ADINA!”
Dressed in a short-sleeved, red leotard with white tights and white wrestling boots, Adina stepped forward and bowed graciously, the crowd giving her a modest ovation. With significantly less skin showing then her opponent which made it less obvious to see, Adina too was in great shape. She had tightened her body a great deal through the past 2 months, and significantly increased her strength, but the crowd seemed disappointed that she had not shown off her newly sculpted body. But Adina was not concerned with the crowd as she ran through her strategy in her head as the announcer climbed out of the ring and lights over the audience dimmed. A few moments later the bell rang, and the match between the two newcomers was finally underway.
Each moved cautiously out of their corner and began to circle, the two women completing a full revolution of the ring as they stared each other down while circling. Slowly they began to move toward each other until, in unison, they lunged forward and interlocked arms in a test of strength. Barbara stepped back with one leg to bolster her stance as Adina did the same. The struggled ensued for a few more moments until finally Barbara took the lead, shifting her body while quickly grabbing Adina’s wrist and twisting her arm out to the side. But using the lessons she learned in her training, Adina went with her momentum, but as Barbara whirled beneath her, Adina spun and kept her body twisting until she had reversed the hold, forcing Barbara to hunch forward, her arm pulled out to her side as Adina twisted on it.
Grunting from the strain, Barbara tried to wriggle free, but Adina’s grip was tight and secure, allowing Barbara no escape. But keeping the action going, Adina gave another quick twist on Barbara’s arm, using it to flip her onto her back. Barbara landed hard, but found herself being quickly plucked off of the mat by the arm once more. Dropping the hold of Barbara’s wrist, Adina straightened up, allowing Barbara to quickly swing her leg around so that it swiped toward Adina’s legs. The pretty Pakistani however adeptly leaped over Barbara’s attempt, and once back on her feet, quickly lunged forward and trapped Barbara in a front headlock.
Surprised by the quickness and athleticism of her opponent, Barbara wrapped her arms around Adina’s back as she was forced to stoop forward, her head tapped beneath Adina’s arm. She tried to figure out her next move but Adina acted first, wrapping her hand beneath Barbara’s chin before yanking on it to painfully jerk her head to the side. Barbara shrieked as the pain shot through her neck, her arm lifting in the air and out to her side. She tried to find some way to escape the painful hold, but as the pain intensified, she found no way break it.
Adina gave one final wrench on Barbara’s neck before releasing her grip. As Barbara stood erect however, Adina quickly seized hold of her wrist and used it to pull her back into the corner before whipping her across the ring by the arm. Barbara charged forward before smacking into the corner, her feet lifting off of the canvas upon her landing before her body settled back against the turnbuckles. Adina rushed in quickly, but as she did, Barbara quickly lifted her leg and shoved her foot into the charging Adina’s midsection.
Doubled over and clenching her aching belly, Adina’s momentum had ground to a halt. Barbara took a second, rolling her head to relieve the pain in her neck before pushing herself out of the corner and confronting her opponent. Still bent over, Adina did not resist as Barbara reached forward and grabbed her thigh, pulling it forward to knock Adina flat on her back. Keeping her grip on Adina’s leg, Barbara pulled it upward before stepping across it and wrapping it around her own, pressing down on the trapped limb. Adina began to slap her ahnds n the mat as Barbara leaned in closer to apply more pressure. As she did however, Adina abruptly reached up and grabbed two handfuls of Barbara’s long, curly locks. With a forceful tug, she flipped Barbara over her body, sending her somersaulting through the air before she crashed on her back.
With yet another of her attacks not only defended against, but easily reversed, Barbara grew frustrated. She felt that she was wrestling well, but Adina had a reply to every one of her moves so far. Feeling a little overwhelmed as Adina quickly stormed over to her, Barbara remained flat on her back as her attacker moved in. Placing her foot in Barbara’s side, Adina reached down and quickly seized Barbara’s right wrist and right ankle. Pushing her foot forward, she began to pull up on Barbara’s limbs, bending her glistening body in an agonizing bow and arrow hold.
With Adina’s foot mashing into the smooth, cardboard colored skin on her side, Barbara’s body stretched painfully apart. She began to yelp as her muscles were pulled apart, Adina grimacing as she continued to spread Barbara’s body. Adina then dropped down into a sitting position, Barbara’s body jarred from the landing as Adina repositioned her foot to gain more leverage. As she adjusted it however, Barbara was able to quickly roll over, turning her body as it rolled toward Adina.
Surprised by the counterattack, Adina found herself flat on her back as Barbara rolled across her shoulders. Trying to press her weight down, Barbara held on as the ref dove in, ready to begin the count. He slapped the mat as Barbara tried desperately to keep all of her weight pressed down, but Adina was able to bridge her back and forced Barbara off of her before the count reached three.
The crowd reacted positively, cheering the two women for the fast-paced, back and forth action. They both got to their feet and faced each other, each slowly circling in the opposite direction as they had done at the beginning of the match. Adina looked determined, but her eyes showed no anger, only focus and concentration. Barbara was focused as well, though a hint of frustration was still evident in her expression.
As Adina backed against the side ropes, she bounced off of them once, challenging Barbara to do the same. Standing in fornt of the ropes alongside where Adina was standing, Barbara accepted the challenge as the two women propelled themselves off of the ropes and raced across the ring. Their paths crossed within inches of each other as the ran down adjacent paths, each dipping into the ropes again before running back toward the center of the ring.
Barbara reached her destination first and quickly slammed on the brakes, sticking her arm to deliver a clothesline to her charging foe. But Adina easily ducked below it and kept running, Barbara turning to face her as she rebounded off of the ropes and raced back at her. Barbara began to run toward Adina, again pulling her arm out, this time trying to deliver a running clothesline. But Adina dove forward, her shoulder spearing toward Barbara and nailing her in the chest.
Barbara’s legs shot into the air as she fell backward, her shoulders smashing into the canvas as her body rolled upward before her legs finally came crashing down. This time it was Adina who slid up Barbara’s body, pressing her weight down onto Barbara’s shoulder and trying to pin her. The ref again dove and counted to two before Barbara arched her back and lunged upward, driving with hr legs to roll Adina off of her.
Rolling over, Adina paused before getting to her feet, Barbara moving a little more slowly, but not far behind. On one knee and about to get up, Barbara suddenly had Adina right on her, grabbing a handful of her hair. Barbara felt her head being jerked up, but as It was, she clenched her hand into a fist and fired a punch in Adina’s unsuspecting breadbasket.
Though not a powerful puncher, Barbara was able to put enough Oomph into the blow to knock Adina backward as she gasped for air. Barbara then got to her feet and charged over to Adina, grabbing her by the hair and pulling her forward. She dragged her over to the corner and once there, slammed Adina’s head down into the turnbuckle. Adina’s body floundered in the corner before Barbara grabbed hold of her wrist and pulled her back to the center of the ring.
Still a bit woozy from the blow to her head, Adina wavered in the center of the ring as Barbara took off, racing toward the ropes. Bouncing off of them, she charged back at Adina, leaping up as she approached and wrapping her legs around Adina’s waist while doing the same thing with arms around Adina’s head. The momentum forced Adina to fall backward as she toppled over, landing on her back. As she did however, she curled her spine so that her body continued to roll over, her momentum forcing Barbara to roll over her.
The two intertwined bodies tumbled in a circle until finally Barbara found her shoulders against the mat as her legs were curled back above her. Seated directly above Barbara’s head, Adina quickly placed the back of her legs down onto Barbara’s armpits, pinning her arms to the canvas while continuing to hold onto the back of Barbara’s thighs. Curled into a tight ball, Barbara was panicked, realizing that there was no escape from the masterful sunset flip that Adina had just trapped her in. The ref dove in, and as Barbara desperately tried to wriggle free, he methodically slapped the mat three times, counting her out.
Adina thrust her arm overhead to celebrate, so excited that she unintentionally kept Barbara trapped in the awkward position for several more seconds before finally realizing it and quickly pulling her legs off of Barbara’s arms while releasing her hold of Barbara’s legs. The haggard housewife’s body unfurled before she rolled onto her side, slapping the mat in frustration at being pinned. She had once again lost the opportunity to secure a spot on the permanent roster, and as Adina celebrated, Barbara quietly walked back to the locker room, dejected. Taking a seat in the locker room, Barbara buried her hands in her head and began to cry. As she did however, the owner of the federation walked over to her. Standing above her, he put his hand on her shoulder and began to speak.
“Listen Barbara, that was a great effort even though you lost. Both of you showed some really good moves out there. So I’ll tell you what I’m gonna do. I’m gonna give a spot on our roster.”
Barbara looked up at him, a tear sill rolling down her cheek. It took her a second to absorb what he had said, but once she did, she leaped up and gave him a hug.
“Oh thank you! You won’t regret it!”
He let her hug him for a moment before gently pushing her away.
“We’ve gotta figure out a character for you to play though, so let me give it some thought and I’ll be in touch..”
As he walked away, Barbara couldn’t help but keep a wide smile on her face. Adina then walked in, humbly walking over to Barbara.
“You are a very good wrestler. I am sorry it turned out this way.” She said apologetically.
Barbara was grateful for the comments, and returned the sentiment.
“Well even though I lost, they offered me a spot on the roster anyway. So who knows, maybe we’ll face each other again some day!” she replied enthusiastically, without a hint of malice in her voice.
“I would like that.” Replied Adina, equally respectful. The two women then shook hands before adjourning to their won corners of the room.
