A DJ is murdered by sound, a frequency that switches off the device controlling his epileptic fits. Hayes's and John's investigation starts to turn up more bodies as they attempt to uncover the perpetrator.
There is a lot of really good stuff in this episode, but clever doesn't count for much when the whole plot is so transparent. The concept of murder by sound is great, as is John's knowledge of music allowing him to make connections and escape from a trap. Speaking of which, how come after confessing, the killer makes a run for it? Okay, so it's a reasonable thing to do given the circumstances, but what puzzles me is how John has time to work out the exact pitch to break glass, then create it inside the room where he is before giving chase, only fractionally behind his quarry. The way the scene is shot suggests he's in there for a while, so the killer obviously is either very stupid, incredibly slow, wants to get caught, or simply doesn't know her way around the building she's escaping from.
The other problem is that from the moment John and Hayes visit, she's standing looking massively suspicious. It's clear she's the guilty party within 10 seconds of her first appearance, as she smirks at the camera, does the arched eyebrows thing and generally tries to tell us all that it's her, she's the evil one, as early as possible to save us watching the rest of the episode.
Aside, then, from its cleverness in killing method, the element that provides a little more enjoyment is the return to the show of scientist Rachel, who John met on the plane in Manifest Destiny.Continuing the theme of his memory loss, Rachel asks John questions about his past that he can't answer, leading him to try to break up their relationship as he can't offer what she wants. The way both find some common ground leads to a rather touching and sweet little ending, even if I'd like to know what John, the little two-timing cheat, did after his date with Stella the other week. How soon they forget…
