Shinji Ikari, the main character of the story. He is the third child and is choosen to pilot EVA-01. Shinji is very shy and has a hard time making friends because of the two childhood events that ruined his life. the first one is the death of his mother, Yui Ikari and the second one is when his father abandoned him. He tries to connect with father by piloting the EVA.

Asuka Langley, is known as the second child to pilot an EVA, she pilots EVA-02. This young girl from Germany is very competitive and she feels she superior to all. She does not get along to well with Shinji (calls him an idiot several times in the series) and she despises Rei. In the series you find the reason for all this behavior which causes a barrier to anyone she talks too. It is her childhood, her mother committed suicide when Asuka was a child.

Rei is the first child and pilots EVA-00. She attends the same school as Asuka and Shinji do but never hangs out with any of them in fact, she does not talk with anyone. She has porblems expressing her emotions. Also, she has a strange relationship with Gendou Ikari.

Misato Katsuragi is the guardian of both Shinji and Asuka. She lives with them and in the series we see that she is frequently shown drinking beer and having fun. She is the Commanding officier of NERV when Gendou Ikari is not there. She is the one who comes up with the clever plans to destory the Angels. She was also, there at the Second Impact when she was a child. Her father is there too.

Touji Suzuhara is the best friend of Shinji but at first he dislike him since he believed that Shinji was the reason his sister is in the hospital. You will also, come to know that Touji is the fourth child.

Aida Kensuke is one of Shinji's classmates and friends. He is not that much of an important character but we know that he is an army freak.

Commander Gendou Ikari or Shinji's father but the way he acts towards Shinji you could not tell that he is. He is the Commander of both NERV and also, what is known as the human completion program. He and Rei seem to have some speical bond.

Yui Ikari is Shinji's mother who died in a failed synchronisation test with EVA-01 and vaporized. Her soul however remains inside the Evangelion. Yui's DNA was used to create Rei which is the reason for their similarity.

Kaji Ryouji is Misato's old boyfriend in collage. He comes in the story the sametime as Asuka. In the series he seems to be a real jerk but in the end he is an ok guy.

Dr. Akagi Ritsuko is one of the NERV scientists who worked on the EVAs and there is a interesting ploted between her mother and her and Ikari.

Maya works for the tatics department of NERV. As an assistant of Ritsuko, she supports the research on EVA technologies.

Fuyusuki is a friend of Genduo and Yui during his colleage years. Eventually, Genduo started to date Yui and much to Fuyutski's displeasure as he too had feelings for Yui
