THE MONTEBELLO'S LAGOONS
The Montebello's lagoons are one of the most beautiful National Parks you may
find in Mexico. This park is located en the municipalities of Trinitaria and
La Independencia, in the southeast of Chiapas near Guatemala. The Montebello's
lagoons are composed of over 6000 acres of mesophilous mountain forests, pine and
oak.
In this area have been registered more than 250 species and over 100 different
types of vertebrates, most of them unique to this particular region of Chiapas.
The 18% of the surface are ocuppied by lakes and lagoons, 52 in total. From
turquoise color to black in color. Because of the rains and the dilution of
limestone, these lagoons have special characteristics such as their shapes, their
sizes, and their depths. The main lagoons are: La Laguna Encantada (The Enchanted Lagoon),
Esmeralda (Emerald), Tinta (Ink), Ensueño (Charmed), Perol, La Cañada (The Vale),
San Lorenzo, Bosque Azul (Blue Forest), Montebello, Pojol and Tzizcao.
Near this place you may visit the caverns of Puente de Dios (God's Bridge) with its
40 meters high roof. You may also visit the archaelogical Maya zone of Chinkultic.
