When we were classmates ...... (in 1993/94)同窗大事記略(上)

(translated from the unpublished Chinese original scripts)

NOTE: The stories are based on observed events, most of them are commonly agreed facts rather than intentional personal attack. But if there are any complaints, I'll consider it and make corresponding changes in the content. What I want to point out is that, these are only little stories and perhaps humour which have already passed for a few years, as you all know, the most secret government files are open to public after the events have happened for years, so I think it won't be a serious problem to write down these things.
I just hope the viewers, whether he/she is one of the classmates or not, to have some fun with these events.

Introduction

These are some stories happened during Form 6 & 7 in the Wisdom class of St. Joan of Arc Secondary School from 1993 to 1995. The school is in Braemar Hill, North Point. Before reading the stories, you visitors may like to have some background information.

Background information

Firstly, I would like to define a word, "Seven", used in the stories below.
"Seven" defined
"Seven" can be referred to a type of behaviour characterised by strange perception, strange reactions, strange outlook etc.(Mak,1997). It is hypothesized that the personality trait of "Seven" is inversely correlated with IQ (intelligent quotient)(Leung,1994), and it is further hypothesized that "Seven" is also inversely correlated with EQ (emotional quotient)(Mak,1997).
Introduction to characters in the stories
Seven--- The class monitor who is also the central character of the stories. He exhibits the personality trait of Seven very much. He had some equipments which make others think he is a Seven guy: "Seven" comb, the toxic drinking bottle with floating creatures inside, a fake Boy London watch (now a fake G-Shock) etc.. He always makes us laugh.
Chun-Wai--- Seven's younger brother, behaved just like Seven.
Leung Man--- the other class monitor with much less to do for the class.
Jimmy--- the trouble maker in the class.
the Flower--- also known as the flower of the school etc., with a easy-recognisable laughing voice.
Long Hair--- a girl with long hair, she was the centre of so much events.

...... these are only basic discriptions.

The stories now begin ....

Basically, the students of Form 6 Wisdom were from the "better Arts" class ,Form 5 Justice, in the previous year (In our school, the classes are named Faith, Hope, Charity, Justice and Wisdom instead of ABCDE), it is because in the "worse Arts" class, Form 5 Wisdom, no one was good enough to promote to Form 6 after the public exam, and in Form 6, there was only one Arts class.

Except those boys, from Form 6 onwards, our school accepts female students. To our class, great changes and fluctuations started as a result.

To me, quickly after the semester started, I was recognised as the "tutor" by the girls, and was often requested/ordered/forced to help the girls with academic problems. I don't really know why this happened, may be SOMEBODY told them I had got one of the best results in the public exam. Seven, as the monitor and got the other best result, became famous/infamous quickly also. And equally quick, he produced the first scandal of the class.

But, before that sort of events happened, at the beginning of the academic year, there were events worthwhile to mention. In the beginning, we had 31 or 32 students in class, after one or two days, 3 students left and went to other school. Throughout the two years of school, the number of students further decreased.

Here was the seating plan of our class (September 1993):

                 Blackboard
   --------------------------------------------------
                                                        DOOR
                          TEACHER

Mick Winnie Seven Dennis Jimmy Shing

Leung Man Chi-Wai Long Hair YK Ah Wo Karen

Jeho Elaine NELSON Joey Flower Pauline

Old Horse Siu-Lan Bobbi Hay-Man Ah Kin Pong

Blind Keung Ah Bang Ng Kong Ah Nok Wai-Tak
As you can see, I was sitting in the middle of the class.

Quickily after the start of the semester, I heard that Seven "likes" the Flower, it was/wasn't a shock to me. When I had a free lesson, I always heard the girls talking about the event. Even if I didn't want to know about it, the words simply enterred into my ears. The news was immediately spread out by Jimmy, and the result was easily predictable.

On the other hand, according to my observation, the intimacy between Jeho and Long Hair was very clearly shown.

Tuesday 2November,1993. Scandal of Chun-Wai

I've heard that, Chun-Wai, Seven's younger brother who is studying in Form 5 in our school, has intention to date with Mick, one of the girls in our class. I didn't believe the news at first, and thought it was only a joke. But, I was wrong.
Jeho and Jimmy also knew this news, and were talking about it in the G.P.A. lesson (Government and Public Affairs, but you can see, this lesson is actually Gossiping and Private Affairs lesson, really "GPA"). They used a tape recorder to ask other classmates' opinion about dating. I also expressed my views.
After school, Leung Man, Seven, Chun-Wai and I walked down hill to North Point. During the period, Chun-Wai admitted that he really wanted to date with Mick. I had some headache immediately, because the news I heard is true! Chun-Wai asked Leung Man whether he will have any "love enemies" in the affair, and Leung Man started planning for Chun-Wai for his affair.
I asked Leung Man afterwards, "Will Mick like Chun-Wai?"
"Well, I'll check it out." was his answer.

Wed 3November,1993

Although I am not asked by Chun-Wai to offer any help, and I really have not any reason to help him, I am able to get the view of Mick.
In the morning, when I am on my way to school, I accidentally meet Mick at the bus stop (#27, at North Point Pier). Remember? she recognised me as her "tutor", so, according to my role, I seemed to be having the need to know what's the view of her in this event.
"Do you know that Chun-Wai has intention to date with you?" I asked directly.
She looked surprised, "What !? really !? ...... That's so terrible ! It is impossible to happen !"
After she relaxed from the "shock", she said," But, what's the view of Seven ? Will he help his brother?"
" Well, I think Seven won't support Chun-Wai. He won't mind if you refuse the affair with Chun-Wai", I replied.
I thought that's the end of Chun-Wai's love story.

Thu 4 November,1993

Unexpectedly, there is something remaining of the event of Mick and Chun-Wai
At recess time, Mick and Chun-Wai met accidentally in the corridor in the school building. When Mick is giving advices to Chun-Wai, L.Chan, one of the strictest teachers in school, walked pass. The girls are afraid, since this can produce a serious trouble.
Why? It is because we were told by the teachers before the beginning of the semster, that inside the school, no single male student can walk with a single female student.
I think this regulation was never implemented to punish students, all the teachers wanted to do is to frighten off the possible relationships between male and female students.
Mick was not punished or scolded by any teachers, at last.

Mon 8 November

The GPA lesson became "Time for the elderly" (a radio program in Commercial Radio 2 by Softhard, in which talks about various interesting topics). We chatted about cartoons in groups, "Ding-Dong", "Touch", "Orange road", "Masked Rider" and "Soccer Kid" were talked about.

Wed 10November

In the morning assembly of school, it was my turn to report news. News report is done by members of the Current Affairs Club, and the committee members were dominated by students of our class (since no one else is competing with us). Seven and Ah Bang are the Chairmen, Dennis is the treasurer , Leung Man is the vice-chairman and I am the secretary. (Note: I've just learned that (after reading the school magazine) Sogo (a student of another F.6 class) also titled as "secretary" of the club, I was amazed, since he had not worked with us in the meetings and in the activities). Actually, we have only a few members. As you'll see, the committee do the jobs ourselves with no help from others. We take turns to report news in the morning assembly, mainly from the important events of the newspaper that day.

Fri 12 November

At 8:35, I arrived at Central Pier, but it was too early to gather. So, I travelled along the newly built escalators from Central to Mid-levels. On my way, I met Eric Tsui, our form-master, we talked for a while.

It was the picnic day of our school, we chose to go to Lamma Island. We boarded the ferry at 10, and arrived at Sok Koo Bay of Lamma Island in an hour. Then, we walked along the hill tracks, sometimes we stopped to see the views. There is not any other things to do. I brought a cassette tape player, and played children's songs like "Banana boat", "Jump aeroplane" etc.. After the return ferry trip, I heard that Long Hair cried, but I haven't got any further news about it since then.

Sat 13November

I was tired, but I had to go to Causeway Bay Community Centre to represent our school and compete in the "Anti-crime and corruption question and answer competition, Eastern District". Seven and Ah Bang were with me.

The first round was a written test, 13 schools 13 schools joined the competition, we found it was quite easy, since we had prepared for the possible questions. After the first round, there was a break for us. Lots of snacks were provided, and I regreted that I've already had my breakfast.

The second round was competed by 4 schools which got the highest marks in the first round. We were lucky to be one of the 4 teams, the others were Cheung Chuk-Shan, Lee Yun-Tin and Chai Wan Caritas. The 4 teams competed to answer the questions. We did not answer many questions, and finally got the third. Cheung Chuk-Shan won, Lee Yun-Tin got the second. We got a $200 book coupon each as a prize.

I was sitting with Flower !

Fri 19November

In the religious studies lesson, I "marked" Karen's English composition before she handed it in (she asked me to do so). At the same time, I discovered that the atmosphere between girls was not good.

Kung Kao Po (the Catholic newspaper) used the front page to defend the standpoint of our school in the event of driving several students out of the school. At lunch time, I was caught by To Lo (our psychology teacher, who supported the standpoint of school) to talk to him about the event. Tsui, our form-master, saw me. After the conversation, I met Tsui, he asked what were To Lo and I saying, I told him the fact, he told me to be careful. (since To Lo was such an infamous figure in school, and was once accused of sexually disturbing another teacher called King of the Killers).

Mon 21November, Scandal of Lovers' Watches

In the morning, Flower discovered Ah Wo was wearing a same watch as Karen, and said they were wearing lovers' watches together. Jimmy spread out the news. It was not abnormal since Ah Wo was sitting with Karen in the classroom.

Thu 2December, the Love Letters

When Flower was sitting beside, life was never quiet. I was talking and joking with her, Karen sometimes turned round and joined us.

Flower asked me to send a letter for her, but Karen saw it, and Flower said it was a love letter to me! After school, Karen saw the letter again, and chased after me in the corridor for the letter. Meanwhile, To Lo saw us, and asked whether the letter was really a love letter or not.

It seemed to me that, Seven was really preparing to take "actions" towards Long Hair.

Mon 6 December, The Damaged Classroom Locks

When I went to school, I realized something abnormal happened. The locks of many classrooms were damaged, so that the classrooms could not be opened, our classroom, however, escaped form the damage.

The affected students went to the hall to attend seminars offered by teachers. After school, the press and TV channels were outside the gate. The main news at night also reported the event. What was the cause of the event? Was that the legitimacy of the school was low?

Thu 9 December

In these days, the events of damaging locks had been reported widely by newspapers. Teachers sometimes talked about the event in class.

From the mouth of a person, I knew that Leung Man had also a target, but I could not get any further information.

At night, I phoned a person and asked what Long Hair probably like for a present, the person gave me a brand name (a cartoon character), of course, I was doing that for Seven. The person was disappointed with Seven's behaviour of "taking actions" to Long Hair.

Wed 22 December, Event of Admitting Love

After the exam for Chinese Language & Culture, during the break, To Lo appeared in our classroom. He said to Ah Bang that he heard "something" about him and Flower, and wanted to know whether it was true or not. Ah Bang said," It's real, so what?" The class responded with surprise. Flower was "nearly to cry" "because of happiness".
