The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World are some of the most spectacular structures ever created. The Greeks decided these 7 wonders, and used the number 7 because it is a sacred number.
The Great Pyramid is the first of the wonders, and it was created in 3000 B.C.. It is the only wonder still standing. This was built close to the city of Cairo, and next to the Nile River in Egypt. It covers 32 acres, and is as tall as a 42-story building. The pyramids were built as tombs for the pharaohs, and they took 30 years to build. The Great Pyramid was built for the Pharaoh Cheops. Grave robbers have destroyed some of the pyramid, but most of it is standing tall.
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon is the second wonder. This was started in 600 B.C., and was believed to have been started by King Nebuchadnezzar for his wife, who lived in the country. This wonder was discovered when archaeologists found pumps where people were believed to have soaked the soil with water. Nothing is left of this wonder except for stones and dust.
The third wonder of the world is the Statue of Zeus. Zeus was the Greek god of gods. He was the top god, and he lived on Mt. Olympus. This statue was made in 5th century B.C., and it was in honor of Zeus. The statue was more than 2 stories tall and the shoes were made out of gold and the throne made out of jewels. This wonder was destroyed in a fire in Constantinople.
The Temple of Artemis is the fourth wonder of the world, which was built in 350 B.C.. This temple was in a town called Ephesus, which is no more. While looking for the temple, John T. Wood came across an old amphitheater. In 1869, Wood found the remains of a temple. Artemis was the Greek goddess of fertility, and the temple was in honor of her. Someone had set fire to the temple, and that is how it was ruined.
The fifth wonder of the world is the Tomb of Maussollos, created by Artonessia in 353 B.C., to honor her husband that she loved so much. The tomb was built out of love, and this is where we get the world mausoleum. Thieves had dismantled a building, and found a tomb in the building. They destroyed the tomb, and now all that is left is a foundation and a staircase leading to the tomb.
The Colossus at Rhodes was the sixth wonder of the world, the one that we know the least about. Rhodes is an island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is said that the Colossus was in a harbor, and ship had to sail underneath the statue to get into the harbor. It was the tallest obelisk ever, and is known very much like our Statue of Liberty. Earthquakes occurred, and the Colossus fell to the ground. Later, pieces of the statue were sold by thieves.
The Pharos of Alexandria, Egypt, was the last of the wonders. This is a lighthouse on an island called Pharos, and it is said to have been made in the 3rd century B.C.. Now, the island is underwater. The lighthouse was 460 feet tall, and it was the tallest structure in Ancient times. It was dedicated to Zeus, but used for sailors to see their way. The lighthouse toppled after several earthquakes. Now, they think that the Sultan’s Fort is made out of some of the marble that is believed to be that of Pharos.
