Soil Structure

An easy way to demonstrate the structure of soil is to make structure cards.

It is as simple as dipping large clods in a 50% solution of white glue and water and placing them on firm paper.

If the clods are very small the glue can be poured or squirted over the soil and poured off.

Pour a solution of 50% white glue and water into a shallow tub.

Large clods can be dipped into the glue, or the glue can be poured over smaller clods.

The clods are then placed on a firm piece of paper to dry. The paper provides a backing that can be used to label the samples as "Prismatic", "Blocky", "Subangular Blocky", or "Granular".

It can be noted that the smaller structures of the soil are typically in the upper part of the soil and that the structure generally increases in size with depth.
