We in this space would be remiss if we neglected to mention the death of Frank Carrano early in the morning of July 25, 1999. We barely knew Frank, but you know the drill: if you're a hockey fan, everyone in that little community is your friend. His death at the young age of 18 has affected us deeply, and we offer whatever relief our prayers and condolences might provide to his family and friends. We talked to Frank several times over the course of his Notre Dame-Fairfield team's state championship season, from the beginning of the season (when we ran a long feature on him and two longtime teammates, Mike Wolfe and Peter Giatrelis, that is now painful to read over) through the middle of the season when injuries and illnesses sometimes limited his playing time, to the end of the season when it was all coming together for the Lancers. And we were deeply touched by the emotion he showed after his team won it all in March. Throughout the year, he played with tremendous intensity, and when after the game we went down to the dressing room, he was an intelligent quote and a good person to be around. In short, he was a joy to cover, and though we barely knew him, we felt like we did. Or at least, like we should have. He will be missed.
