Feature
(October 1, 2004) "Whatever creativity is, it is in part a solution to a problem."      At first, I didn't have any idea of what the film is all about. I haven't seen its sneak preview nor heard it from friends. Maybe because the characters were not that familiar or maybe the movie wasn't interesting at all. I didn't know until I was there watching it at the Film Center of which I got my ticket for free. My friend gave it to me…      The film was in fact nice. It was able to make the audience laugh and appreciate the seemingly obscene yet artistic nude photographs of a group of old women - the so called "Calendar Girls." It is unique in its own way in portraying liberal art among old aged people. I like the idea of the old women posing for calendars because it deviates from the common conception that old people should remain reserved since they have already gone through being teenager or being single. It also suggests that old people could be good models. Besides the photos were very artistic and creative, not really exposing the private parts. I think that's creative especially when your subjects are old women. I could imagine how much courage they have taken out just to complete the pictures for the 12 months of the calendar. It was really a challenge for them and they have succeeded.      The movie is also very interesting indeed. Even though the characters include old people I didn't get bored at all. The narrative is well portrayed in the scene and the nude shots looked real.      As for me, there are four lessons that I have learned from this movie. First is about kindness. The old women volunteered themselves to raise funds to help a hospital that was important to them. One of the women's husbands died because incompetence of facilities of the hospital where he was confined. This gave the woman the sorrow and frustration so she and her friends organized some activity to generate funds. After some trials, finally they have decided to make a calendar featuring their very own artisitic pictures.      Another is the courage and determination of the women to pursue their project. All of their efforts were rewarded. They have not only successfully helped the hospital, but they have given more than what is expected plus, they became famous that they became popular to the Hollywood. Despite the many detractors, they continued their work. They were able to stand up and shine among the crowds. They have also proved to themselves that they can actually do it.      Third is the strong friendship that was nurtured among the women. They became closer to each other even when there were many people trying to put them down because of the vulgarity they have shown to the public. They were able to surpass it and remained intact.      Lastly, and also the reason why I have put the quote up there by Brian Aldias is that, the women were very creative and unusual while they were sharing their kindness to the hospital. Their creativity gave more than what is the solution to their problem, which is to earn money more than what they have needed and expected. Indeed, whatever creativity is, it is in part a solution to a problem. by: garette |
