Took this picture months ago. It is in a folder called "Walks and Landscapes." I include it here because walking was one of the many things I intended to do this summer, but did not. The whole summer was like that.

Listening to the two Metheny/Mehldau cds in a kind of shuffle on the computer. Lately have been listening to lots of weird stuff, including Sound Grammar, only the second jazz album in history to win a Pulitzer, and Zero Tolerance for Silence, Pat Metheny's least popular album. Scary that the free jazz is growing on me. Must be my frenetic mood these days.

Tomorrow school starts, and of course I'm not ready. I will have NINE classes, and each one will be different. After spending the bulk of my summer getting ready, I don't feel very close to being with it. I already feel tired, and I haven't even gotten the first paper to grade.

The good news is that I got an email from the people at Sniplits, saying they wanted to buy two of my stories. The stories are "Puppy," a short short I wrote a couple years ago and "A little accident," written last summer. This is exciting news for a couple of reasons (other than the usual Yeehah! for finding a home for my writing). First, they intend to pay more than I've made on a story in years. It isn't even three figures, but it feels good to get paid for what one loves to do. Second, related to pay, they have a royalty schedule, based on the number of people who get the story (which is published in audio). The more people get the story, the more I can make from it. This is the first time I have an opportunity to get something more than the usual tiny, tiny check. Third, I was getting concerned about both stories. "Puppy" is one I thought was pretty good, but I was getting concerned I was the only one who thought so. "A little accident" is a story that is like those I often write, that Bryan says are "boring" because "nothing happens" (no offense taken by that by the way). I mean the action interests me, and I guess at least one more editor. Anyway, it is good to find paying homes for these pieces. Now, if I could just get that book deal...

Fall Soccer has started (the outdoor season). Alex and Michaela are both playing in U-14, but on different teams. Michaela is with her team from the spring, the Tornados, and Alex is still with RC United. It will make for and interesting season, especially with me assisting with United. (Not to mention four practices a week!) Alex also has choir on Mondays and Max will have Scouts on Tuesdays. He plans to play basketball again (we still have to get his goal up). I want Christina to stay in art, but it may be hard to commit to it since I don't know if there is room for her in the class on Thursdays (pretty much the only weekday we have free). Michaela and Alex were going to do bells again at church, but we are now thinking that isn't going to happen. Anyway, it is a pretty full schedule, especially with the twins starting middle school tomorrow.

And why am I still up? Good freakin' question.

Congratulations on your recent publishings. I know what you mean about busy schedules. I wish more of our family was as internet interactive as we are. Sorry about the nine classes. I know with them all being different you are going to be overwhelmed unless you have very good organizational skills. Even that, NINE? Good grief. Have a good 3 day weekend.

Well, hopefully it will mean more $ and less committee work. Peace...
