Congratulations to all of the IPMS North Brisbane competition winners for the year 2001

The year is certainly moving along quickly  the club has held its first two meetings. January’s being the trophy night for our 2001 competition. February has seen us move into the new building at the school.

This edition of Model East includes the results of our 2001 competition. Also the competition results for  February an article from Grenville Davies on his Hasegawa Stuka.  A new segment called “What The?” and the usual round up of new releases from the Internet.

For those of you with Internet access you may have noticed the revamped IPMS Queensland web site. I have uploaded the new site after taking over the duties of webmaster from Peter Merrick. I will endeavour to update the site with photos, articles etc as time permits. If you haven’t seen it yet get onto the internet and have a look the url is at the bottom of the page.

Who were they?

  • Rita Louise Zucca -“Axis Sally’ in Italy

  • Mildred E. Gillars -“Axis Sally” in Germany

  • William Joyce -(1906—1946) alias “Lord Haw Haw” Irish - American who broadcast for the Germans during WW2: he was tried, convicted and hanged after the war.

  • Iva Ikuko Toguri d’ Aquino - known to the allies in the Pacific as “Tokyo Rose”

  • Joe Rosenthal - Photographer who won the Pulitzer Prize for picture of U.S. Marines raising the American flag on Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima (March 15 1945): the event was later  restaged so Rosenthal could get a better picture.

  • Paul Tibberts Jr. Colonel who piloted the B29 “Enola Gay” that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, August 6, 1945.

  • Adolf Hitler was Time magazines “Man of the Year for 1938”

  • 7 Destroyers ran aground in the Santa Barbara Channel, Sept 8, 1923: USS “Chauncey,” USS “Delphy” (flagship), USS “Fuller,” USS “S.P.Lee,”  USS “Nicholas,” USS “Woodbury,” USS  “Young.” The USS “Farragut,” and USS “Somers,” were damaged: 22  sailors died.

  • The USS “Skate” was the first submarine to surface at the North Pole in 1959.

  • 26 was how old George Armstrong Custer was when he made general during the Civil War.
