The Urgent Necessity for Reorganization of the Maya Religious Hierarchy on the Level of the Aj Kij as the Highest and Supreme Authority demands the Transmission of these Documents that are Primarily Religious, but which also contain Philosophical Thought and some of those Aspects of Our Sciences that gives a Special Form to our Cultural Identity. During the Course of this Painful Walk, following Years of Fruitful Experience in which we Projected and Imparted the Razon d'Etre of our Culture; We realize that We still Lack More than We can Share.
For that Reason We must Continue Researching. We urge All the Groups into which we have Apparently been Divided, to Understand that We come from the same Maya Root: and that We can work United to Accomplish a Great Task; the Education of Current and Future Generations. Within the Great Volume of Wisdom that our Ancestors accumulated, these Thoughts became Laws of Social Order. These should at All Times be Present and Differentiated within the Consciousness of the Modern Maya; so that We should neither be affected nor confused by other Forms of Thought; nor that Others should try to reduce the Importance of our Culture. In order to have a clear Sense of Identity we must know Our Culture thoroughly, because Defining it will cause a desire to continue Maintaining, Developing and Improving the Teachings and Material Aspects of our Culture. There are other situations that One might wish to Forget for Feelings of Shame; which have been generated by a Process of Social Racism; which would prevent Us from Realizing that We are an Important Part of Humanity. Should We permit our Cultural Values to Disappear, We would cease to have Meaning and Humanity will have lost Much of their History. When we speak of Reorganization, we don't wish to promote a Reckless Fanaticism, for this would only be to Fall into Contempt for the Present Time. And Since Times Change, We should keep in Mind three Important Aspects, which are:
-Technology must not act as an Element of Transfer; that is to say to exchange one thing for another. We should keep in mind that Technology is no more than a Tool that Speeds and Increases the amount of what We want to obtain or make. We must remember that the use and adoption of technology is no more than a Vehicle for Economic Improvement.
[For Example; the Fact that an Aj Kij acquires a vehicle in order to move quickly to and from the Sacred Places in order to carry out their Ceremonies instead of walking, they would not for this reason cease to be Maya. This would only occur should they become Ashamed of being an Aj Kij, or that they do not care to speak their Native Language with their People because they wish to believe that they are Superior to them.]
- The Progress and Development of Our Culture in certain ways has remained stagnant, for there is Nothing now that carries our mark. An Alienating Thought has been Forced upon us, to cause us to Renounce our Origin; a situation that would make us Despise our Parents, our Maya name and come to place more importance on trying to Imitate the Foreigner. We might come to believe that upon obtaining a Tape Player, a Television or some other Electrical Device, we have achieved Complete Advancement. But we only place Ourselves in Debt, because what we have Achieved is False, both in the Eyes of Ourselves and Our Community; these Things cannot fill our Lives completely.
- Civilization affects us All and We are Related within the same Society. The Fact of not having the Opportunities for Advancement [Education, Health, Transportation, etc.] does not mean that We have become Retarded or that We are the Cause for this Arrested Development. It has been said that our Blood is Inferior to that of some Others. This Concept seeks to render us Inactive, lacking a Spirit of Advancement; and originates with those who wish to Overcome us Intellectually. This has not caused us to Decieve Ourselves, to Believe that we have left the Mire and have now become Civilized simply because we now have a House in the City, Dress in Foreign Clothes and Speak a Foreign Language. These are elements that definitely must not Influence us on the Level of Consciousness of Identity. To Obtain that other form of Identity, it would be better to completely pour out the Blood that we were Born with and Inject Foreign Blood.
It is Time that We take off the Yoke that has Burdened us for almost Five Hundred Years. We must become Organized without Selfishness nor the Individualism of Caste, Economic or Political Power; and We should Struggle for a Culture that has been all but Forgotten. We have not been taken Completely into Account, but treated like Objects on Display. For this Reason it is Vital that we should Educate our Children in the Complete Sense; that we should Teach and Transmit to them Our Language, Moral Thought and the other Cultural Values that we have Recieved from our Ancestors.
So that None may
Say
that the Maya are on the Road to Extinction ;
We must become a
Greater Force
to firmly Discard this Shroud that Covers Us
Then shall We become
a Star Brightly Shining in the Universe ;
where Everything will Be in Harmony
In Order that All should Understand each other and Manifest Our Spiritual Values and Morals as Human Beings. During the Course and Process of the Development of Humanity throughout Time, All Civilizations, Cultures and Peoples; beyond the Differences in Social Strata, have been Granted the Virtue of being Inspired by a single Supreme Being. Education, Good Spiritual Conduct and Divinely Inspired Morals are the Norm of Good Human Behavior. It is the Object of the Search for Happiness, Peace and the Good Road. The only thing required is Understanding and Compassion for Each Other with all Due Respect. Religious Feelings are a Single Content that Souls show from the Inside and Outside, All Around, Above and Below. All that should change are some Aspects of Prejudice towards Peoples; [the word ETHNOS or RACE is an Academic Term, and will not be used here] only the Forms of Religious Devotional Practices Differ for Expressing the Action, Places, Elements and Materials Used and Dates Celebrated. Every Culture organizes their own Laws, Principles and Religious Thought in order to Arrive at the Same Content.
When the Europeans arrived to invade this land, the Spanish brought so-called 'Christian' Missionaries. When they saw for First Time the Form in which Our Parents dressed and performed their Religious Practices, these Strange Barbaric Beings were Horrified. Horrified upon seeing that Our Grandparents invoked Mother Nature on the Hills and in the Ravines, in our own Languages, which they could not understand, in order to Adore God. For their Ignorance and Incapacity to Understand another Culture, another World; these supposed first 'Christian' Colonizers Enslaved and Dominated Our Peoples. They did not Understand and they have not Understood that it is to the same God that we Direct Our Devotions. Even Today, our Maya Cultural and Spiritual Values continue to be restricted. They have always Refused our Concept of God, and this same Implies a Denial of God. Our Maya Spiritual Values Proceed in the following Manner: the Whole Cosmos, the Entire Universe, down to the Smallest Grain of Sand are but the Thought and Reflection of an Eternal God.
These are the Profound Forms of Our Religious Thought; the Invocation of the Spirit of the Elements of Nature and the Cosmos; these are considered Cosmic Agents in the Dimensional Plane. In the Plane of the Abstract, our Maya Ki-Che Theogony contemplates Two Forces intervening in the Creation : a Force that Gave Life and another that Formed a Conscious Mankind with Intuition. Tepeu Gucumatz and Ishpiyacoc Ishmucane made a Pact; mixing Four Colored Ears of Maiz as the Sacred Basic Elements in order to Form the Body and Flesh of our First Four Genealogical Parents. Men made of Maiz of the Four Sacred Colors : White, Red, Yellow and Black. In Ancient Times our Ancestors made Ceremonies in Veneration to the Holy Spirit of Maiz, that is to say, Celebrations of Great Scope. From these Millennial Roots, today in the Maya Communities are performed Ceremonies for Blessing the Seed and the Harvest. Although no longer practised with all the Original Elements, they do Exist and they continue the Ideals and the Sentiments for Practicing and Cultivating the Sacred Teachings of our First Parents. So also, Ceremonies are Performed in order to Request the Rains because it is elementary part for the Development of Humankind and their Crops, etc. As in Ancient Times, Liturgical Ceremonies are performed that essentially consist of Acts of Sport; that is, the Ball Game. The movements are executed carefully, in order to Symbolize the Struggle between the Forces of Light and Darkness. In the old Maya World, inside the context and precept religious when a boy is born it is necessary to make a Presentation of the same, by means of a Ceremony at a Maya Altar to show Gratefulness and Blessing 'Before the Sun'. If a Boy or Girl is not Presented by means of this Ceremony, it could mean that they would Live their Whole Lives in Moral Darkness.
Our Spiritual Values and Feelings are manifested through Diverse Forms and Ways. For example: in the Ceremony of Presentation, the following are Performed: Dances, Fasts, Sacrifices, Sexual Abstinence, etc., Symbolizing and Demonstrating the Principles of Maya Morality.
In the Maya Religion three Sacred Principles Exist; These Are:
It is So, that the Creation of the First Men formed of the element Maiz were: BALAM AKAB, BALAM KITZE, IK BALAM and BALAM MAJKUTAJ. They being the Origin of our Human Ancestors, Formed of an Element that Functions more Harmoniously within Nature; as Water, Fire, Mountains, etc. According to the POP WUJ, the Sacred Maya Book that tells how the Formation of the Earthly World occurred, how the Flood of Resin occurred, which resulted Ceremonies taking place, being carried out in a different manner by our first Grandparents and Parents. Before being going to carry out any Supplication at the Special Altars, they had to learn Discipline within several Orders in order to come before the Face of their Divinities by making Ceremonies according to the Dates marked on the Sacred Calandar, as well as the Places where the Ceremonies are carried out
At the Moment all the Orders, Disciplines and Regulations are already falling into Disuse, and in this Small Treatise We give some of the Objectives as a Spiritual and Moral Duty of Sharing and Instructing the Little that We have been able to Know and Understand; since we believe that Now is the Time and that it is Necessary to Instruct all the Maya Descendants, since we should be Conscious that we must not lose our Sacred Spiritual Values that have been Bequeathed to us since Remote Times; since our Maya Religion is very Ancient. For those of us of Maya Blood it is a Great Obligation, Task and Mission to study it carefully
Our Maya Faith has
a Special Importance
so that not just Anyone
can Attribute Things that do not Relate to it ;
much less the People
that are not of Maya Blood.
Within our Religion, only Certain Individuals
can Exercise Responsibilities and Practice Rituals,
having been Chosen by these same Spiritual Laws
in Accordance with their Destinies
The Former are Reasons that make us feel the Necessity of writing, by Way of Relating Information so that it can be Practiced in just Form and Objective according to the Thought of our Ancestors; although We do not Seek to give a Formula, but rather to Present these Notes as a Guide. So that our Maya Culture maintains its Purity and that the Process of Mixing, that tends to Confuse the Purpose contained within the Faith, Belief and Secret Sacred Traditions that Our Ancestors Discovered and Marked; Does Not Continue. We should the Practice Correct Forms so that Our Cultural Values do not Continue Losing Content.
We will write only of the Practical Essence of our Religion, since an Extensive Description would be very Tiresome for the Reader; but We want Those who Execute the Ritual Practices to Observe it as a Proper Form of Behavior. That One who has the Sacred Wand; [TZITE] to Say that without This, One could not observe the Ritual Practices; since they would be Profaning their Faith, is One Thing, Only. It is more Appropriate to Stress that the Admixture consisting of Sentences in Spanish as well as Latin, the Carrying and Taking of Elements of Other Religions; [Saints, Churches, etc.] is Not as Our Ancestors made Them; in Our Native Language, and Offered to the Nawales that are Contained within Nature, Water, Fire, Air and Earth, etc. For that Reason, We should continue Investigating more thoroughly and Know the Moral Sentiments and Spirituality of Our Religion, not to Confuse it with the Ceremonies of Other Religions and Sects.
