Maya Kiche Cultural School
Started in 1997, Takiliben May Wajshakib Batz has been Teaching Classes in Maya Culture to a Group of Thirteen Maya Children in the Home of Chuch Kajaw Rigoberto Itzep. Followig a Two Year Hiatus, Classes began once more, this Past Summer with an Enrollment of Six.
The Classes are Taught Predominently in the Maya Kiche Language and Center on the Calendar and Morality in the Traditional Life Style. Since January, 2001; the Attendance has Risen to Eight Children. This is a Necessary Personal Sacrifice for Mr. Itzep, Who actually Donates His Time, as He Spends More on Certificates and a Graduation Party than is Covered by the Q5- per month Tuition.
Necessary, because of the Pressures being Brought to Bear by Well Funded Mercenary Christian Evangelists on the Community, often using Powerful Loud Speakers in Hitler-like Tirades lasting for Hours. Even if the Message of Love and Tolerance Fails to Come Through because the Enraged Preacher is Shouting into an Over-Amplified P.A. System, the Message of Hate, Intimidation and Terror Shines Through.
In the Face of such Tactics, there is No Option beyond Quiet Perserverance.
Maya Children’s Dance Group
Beginning with the Vernal Equinox, 2000, this Group of 8 Maya Children have Practiced and Performed Several Dances as Choreographed by Chuch Kajaw Rigoberto Itzep as Interpretations of Traditional Dances Reflecting Maya Kiche Religious Values. The Most Recent was Performed on Wakib Toj [Two Days Before the Celebration of Wajshakib Batz] just outside of the Enclosure at Paklom Hill.
Because of the Favorable Reception by the Traditional Community in Momostenango, Mr. Itzep has begun Preparations for another Dance to be Performed for the Vernal Equinox, thus marking out a Full Year of Selfless Efforts by these Maya Children to Encourage other Maya Children to Value Their Mother Culture.
A Special Program Involving a Trip to a Sacred Site is being discussed for the Solstice, should Funds become Available for Transportation, Food and Housing for Fifteen Maya Children and Several Adults.
