For centuries the Mali Empire has been the undoubted master of Western Africa. It traded gold in the thriving market towns such as Gao, Timbuktu, Djenne, and Niani. But centuries of power struggles and wars have taken its toll and now its former subject peoples have begun to conquer the weakening empire.
