            THEATRE 7 HISTORY

Theatre 7 began as a spin-off of a Decatur theatrical group called “Town and Gown” when a group of people decided to do more commercial material. In December of 1963, thirty people organized what is now THEATRE 7.
Today, there are more than 150 members performing or working behind the scenes, and THEATRE 7 also has community support. The production history is one of musicals, comedies, mysteries, drama, melodramas, one-act plays, variety shows, and even a “traveling troupe”.
THEATRE 7 is an all volunteer community theatre who welcomes any person interested in becoming involved. THEATRE 7 also has a constantly expanding costume collection, which they make available for rent.
THEATRE 7 is a name that has no meaning whatsoever. It was suggested to go along with the trend back in that time—a name with a number attached.   THEATRE 7’s first production was Light Up the Sky in May of 1964. The first show on the Kirkland stage was My Fair Lady in 1971. The first show in the Decatur Civic Center was Hello Dolly in 1980.
The headquarters of THEATRE 7 has been in many different locations throughout the years. They include St. John’s Episcopal Church, Swain and Meyers Building, above Greenburg’s Shoe Outlet, Old St. Nick Hotel, and 111 North Main Street. THEATRE 7 has finally settled at 131 North Water Street.
