| Forest God/Tree Spirits |
| Tree Spirits- Cute, small and friendly they help Ashitaka by granting him passage. They lead him, by the thousands through the “forbidden” forest. Their mother is an oak tree. They all rise to the trees and shake their heads (making a “rain maker” sound) to greet the nightwalker. Also, the very end shows hope as a single spirit looks at a new shoot sprung from the ashes. |

| Forest spirit/Night Walker- The God of life and death during the day he appears as a deer like beast with multiple horns, a human head and bird like feet. During the night he transforms into a spirit walker (see pictures) until the next day. No real personality is given except that of mystery, like that of nature. Jigo is after him, due to the decree from the emporer. It is rumored that that he has the gift of eternal life, that is why the emperor wants him. |
