NEW GPS UNITS AID IN TRANSPORT OF SICK CHILD
As a part of the new 9-1-1 system soon to be in place in Monroe County, the Sheriff's Department patrol cars and ambulance will be equipped with GPS units. One unit has already been installed in a Deputy Sheriff vehicle, and it came in handy Thursday May 11th 2000. A small child being treated at the Mid-Delta Health Clinic was needing to be transported to a Little Rock hospital and Larry and Judy Steeland of Power Systems in Clarendon graciously offered to let the transport helicopter land inside the fence there. The Sheriff's Department was called to obtain the latitude and longitude co-ordinates inside the fence, and then the co-ordinates were relayed to the helicopter, and they used the co-ordinates to land inside the fence.
The Sheriff's Department has recently restored and old ambulance and turned it into a Rescue Unit. The rescue unit will primarily be used in land and water searches for missing persons. It will house emergency equipment for needed for located lost persons such a GPS equipment, lights, drag lines, gas, etc. Seen above Certified Part-Time Deputy Michael Neal of Brinkley was instrumental in this project, and even applied the new Sheriff's Department markings himself.
