Wednesday Sept 20 Th 1878
Dear Jonny
You must excuse me for not writing to you sooner than this. I am pretty well at present. I have not had the opportunity of sending you a letter sooner since times are bad here and I am not able to work like I used to do. I believe your letter arrived here on Friday morning but I was not home till Sunday morning. I was glad to hear that you were well and in good health. I would like to see you home again before I die. I should like to see you once again I hope by the time that I receive a answer from you that I will be as well in health as I am at present.
Write to me as soon as possible .
They are all quite well at home. Your cousin Ellen has come down the country to go to Place.
No More at present
from your affectionate
Aunt
Mary Quirk
Note: The space was blank in the middle of this letter and written in pencil in this space was the following. I was not hard to take a hint that same night.
Letter to Samuel John Booth Johnson County, Georgia from His Cousin Patrick Quirk in Liverpool England or Ireland. No date on letter thought to be in the 1878 time frame.
Dear Cousin
You must excuse me for not writhing to you. I have been working this long time. I am not living with my mother now. My mother does not keep the house now since my Uncle John died.
When you write to my mother say nothing in the letter as I will not be at home. I live in the seller now.
I intend to see you myself this winter. When I see you I will tell you what I left for. I do not care for where I am now. When I see you I will be by myself if God spares me. I will be out there this Winter. Jack the last nine months I have been starving. My mother gave me all she could but she had nothing for herself. My other relatives did not care.
Jack I hope J. W. shun me when you see me out there. Say nothing about this in the answer to this letter.
I remain your
Cousin
P. Quirk
