Angry indigo eyes glared at the ice, as the booted feet faltered again. Tired eyes
closed briefly, tired of failing, of seeing the same things happen time after time. A resigned
sigh escaped tender lips, sore from being bitten to cover failure, disappointment and pain.
Skates slowly glided across newly frozen and polished ice, picking up momentum as the
young woman's confidence grew. Turning on her right foot, she grinned and continued her
lap of the ice rink backwards.
Footsteps echoed through the hall, faintly at first, approaching the rink. Her smile
widened, and she waved as a young man with shoulder length chestnut hair in a ponytail
entered through a door on the ground level. He laughed and crossed his arms over his
chest. "So, we think we're pretty good now, huh Ari?"
Ariana cocked her head to one side, considering. "Not bad," she replied, sticking
out her tongue and winking at her partner. "All things considered, that is," she grimaced
comically, gesturing to her left foot. "So," she began, stopping as she approached her
partner. "Who were you ringing?"
"Home," he replied, vaulting over the barrier to join her.
	"And?"
	"And what?"
	"Michael!" Ari protested.
"And," Michael grinned, "just like we hoped, the press has no idea we're here in
Japan," he smiled gratefully. Placing one hand around Ari's waist he pushed off, starting
another lap around the ice. "So, no more cameras and journalists hounding us while we get
you back to your old self."
"Michael, they said I'd never be able to do that again," she reminded him in a
whisper, her heart breaking at the thought.
"Hey," he brought her to a standstill, and took her chin in one hand, forcing her to
look at him instead of the ice. "They also said you'd never skate again. Or be able to walk
properly. Look at how much you've done so far," he urged her. "Don't let them stop you
now, not when you're so close!"
Light violet eyes stared into hazel ones. "You really believe I can?" she asked, voice
trembling, shaken by his conviction and faith in her abilities. It meant so much to her to be
able to skate. It was all she'd ever wanted to do, to fly on the ice. It was her life.
"Of course," Michael promised, wrapping his arms around her, and leaning his
cheek on the top of her head.
"I should warn you I still can't walk for long without an ankle guard," Ari
murmured wryly into Michael's shoulder. "But thankyou."
	"For what?"
"For....everything. But mainly for sticking around," she told him.
"I'll be here for as long as you need me, partner," Michael pledged.
*beeep beeep* *beeep beeep* *beeep -*
"Oh man," Ari groaned, pulling out of Michael's embrace to switch off the alarm on
her wristwatch.
	"What?" asked Michael, confused.
"I'm late," she muttered. "I'll catch you later, kay?" she said, giving him a quick
peck on the cheek, and heading towards the door Michael had previously entered from.
"Ari?" Michael called after her. "Late for what? Ari!?" The door thudded shut behind
her. "Dammit!" Ari was his partner and his best friend, sometimes it almost seemed like
something more, but she was more independent than he would have liked. They were
partners after all - they were meant to be able to tell each other everything. What was so
secret she couldn't tell him?

White eyes stared unseeingly, but unswervingly at the unfortunate blonde woman.
"Say what, Solaris?" a rich, low voice demanded, quivering with barely suppressed rage and
tension.
Vivid emerald eyes broke from the gaze of the other woman, briefly closing as she
steeled herself for the onslaught of the building storm. "I repeat, Oracle, our vessel is
running extremely low on fuel, and none of us currently has the energy to spare that would
enable us to push it a bit further."
Solaris nervously brushed gleaming golden hair back behind her ears, and smoothed
down her tight red outfit. An emerald diadem was suspended from a golden chain across
her forehead, positioned directly above and between eyes of the same sparkling hue.
Gemstones of the same size and colour adorned her ears. High-heeled boots, the same
scarlet red as the rest of her scandalous outfit, rose to mid-thigh. "We are currently in an
undeveloped Class 7 system." She hesitates, but the words seem to burst from her throat.
"Was it really wise to have come quite this far?"
Sky blue energy blazed from Oracle's pale eyes, illuminating her face and the
surrounding darkness. Solaris involuntarily flinched back, all too familiar with her leader's
displays of temper. "Must I remind you that it was necessary to travel this far to escape
pursuit? They don't dare chase us into undeveloped solar systems, for fear of destroying an
innocent planet or somehow interfering with a planet's natural evolution," Oracles sneered,
holding the beliefs of their people in contempt. "By journeying this far, we not only elude
their pathetic attempts of capture, but we also have the opportunity to conceal ourselves on
an uninhabited planet." *However unpleasant that might be* Oracle thought, but didn't
share with her underling. Solaris was going to be enough of a pain as it was. She didn't
need to know that her leader felt roughly the same way.
"If necessary I have enough energy to sustain our ship for the extra period of time it
will take us to reach the next system, but....." Oracle trailed off, as she felt a twinge of
premonition wash over her.
	"But ...?" prompted Solaris.
Oracle ignored her younger subordinate. Chin in hand she mused silently, and
Solaris, knowing better than to interrupt, had no choice but to wait and try to hide her
impatience. Dressed comfortably in Arabian-esque style clothing, with mainly short, spiky
pale blue hair, Oracle didn't look the part of one of the most powerful psychics in the
known galaxies. Neither would anyone have immediately known she was one of the
leaders of the negaverse rebellion against the Pleides system, the home of herself and her
subordinates. At last Oracle commanded, "Solaris, bring up the system maps for the two
solar systems in question."
Confused, Solaris walked over to a glowing panel in the floor. Waving her hand
over it caused a rectangular block to rise from it. Fingers rapidly flying over the alien
symbols present on the panel, Solaris brought up a map of the Centauri system. Oracle
closed her eyes and pictured the system for a few seconds and announced, "No. It is not
suitable. I have seen our future if we go there - we will be destroyed by the Pleides
Combined Forces."
Emerald eyes blinked, dazedly trying to assimilate Oracle's prediction. Bending her
head over the panel, she concentrated on bringing up the Sol system. If Oracle said they
would die, then they would. Her predictions were never wrong. A second holographic map
appeared in Oracle's State Room. A golden ball sent off solar flares in the middle of the
room, surrounded by nine other balls of varying sizes and colours. Eyes still closed, Oracle
lifted one hand and slowly moved it according to her premonitions. "Freeze simulation."
Opening her eyes she studied the small blue and green planet she had singled out. She looked at
Solaris, shock written all over her face. Solaris trembled with barely suppressed
fear. She has never seen Oracle surprised in all her time with the psychic.
"Wh-what do you see?" Solaris asked, her shaking voice betraying her emotions.
"Nothing. I see nothing." The faint whisper echoed around the room. The two
women stared at each other, and at the small planet for what seemed countless ages.
"What does this mean?" the overawed blonde questioned.
Oracle sighed. This could take a while, and who knew if Solaris's tiny mind could
make sense of it. "Assemble the others. I may as well inform you all at once." *And save
myself the headaches of dealing with the same closed-minded questions over and over
again.*

Sparkling ocean blue eyes stared at a wristwatch in disbelief. Raking back silky jet
waves of hair with one hand, Darien pulled open his door and rushed out of his apartment.
"Late for the first day of school! How did this happen?" he muttered to himself. "God, I'm
turning into Serena!" The moment he said it he regretted it. It was severely unfair to his
girlfriend, who, he had to admit, had improved her habits a lot since he had first met her.
Racing out of his apartment block door, he looked back at the clock on the wall, hoping his
watch was somehow wrong. No such luck.
	Bang!!
Darien collided with someone and they both fell to the ground. Collecting his books
with one hand, he tried to offer apologies to his unfortunate victim. "I'm so sorry. I wasn't
watching-"
"Waaaahhhh!" a horrible wail interrupted him. "It's not fair!"
Darien froze, recognising the terrible noise. "Serena?" he asked incredulously,
turning to face a pretty girl with long blonde hair arranged in two pigtails on her head.
The voice broke off in mid-wail. "Darien?" the blonde sniffed, tears welling in baby
blue eyes.
"What are you doing up this early?"
"What d'you mean? School starts in ten minutes," Serena replied defensively.
	"I know, but....if I hadn't bumped into you, you would've been...on time," Darien had
a hard time relating this fact to a girl whose specialty was oversleeping. It was a well-
known fact that Serena was almost always on detention for her tardiness.
Tears began to spill over in her beautiful eyes. "Darien, don't be so mean to me. I
can take it from Rei, but not from you..." the words became lost as she began to sob again.
"Oh, Serena, I'm sorry," Darien apologised, as he pulled her to her feet. He gently
placed his arms around her, pulling her close to him. He hated to see her cry - it was one of
the things he hated most. Especially as he was often the cause of it.
Serena snuggled closer to her true love, sighing blissfully. *I know everything will
always be alright, as long as I have Darien,* she thought contentedly. "I could stay here
all day," she murmured into Darien's shirt. "I don't mind another detention for this."
Darien was jolted back to reality. "Oh man, eight minutes," he cried, checking his
watch. He disentangled himself from Serena. "I'm so late. I'll never make it even if I run."
"What's the big deal?" yawned Serena, tucking her arm under his. "I'm late all the
time," she offered. "It's never hurt me before."
"Serena!" Darien glared at his girlfriend, amazed by her lack of understanding. "I
realise school may not be a big deal for you, but it is for others, okay? Especially in
university!" he snapped, trying hard not to completely lose his temper. "Great. Just great,"
he muttered under his breath. "And I'll never make it in the car in peak hour traffic."
"Why not use your motorbike," Serena suggested timidly, still sniffling a bit from
Darien's remarks. "You can dodge most of the cars that way," she added, trying to be
helpful.
Darien stared at Serena in astonishment. Serena gulped, fearing she had said
something wrong again. "Meatball head, you're a genius!" he cried, pecking her on the
cheek as he rushed by, heading for the garage of the apartment block.
"Well, on to school," Serena muttered less than enthusiastically. She scuffed her
shoes against the sidewalk, and slowly began trudging her way to Crossroads High.

*Six minutes,* Darien thought to himself, whizzing in and out of traffic lanes. *I
just might make it after all! * The thought cheered him immensely, and he grinned as he
overtook two more cars. Serena had had the right idea after all. Spying a gap in the lane to
the right of him, Darien prepared to switch lanes. He moved forward, only to be cut off by
a Harley Davidson motorbike, crossing dangerously in front of him to fill the gap. Darien
clenched the handlebars on his bike so tightly his knuckles went white.
The other rider, as if sensing his thoughts, turned back to face him. The darkened
helmet concealed most of the rider's face, but dark eyes seemed to laugh at him, igniting his
temper. Darien sped between the rushing cars as fast as he dared, but the other rider was
always one step ahead. Watching the guy narrowly miss a collision while speeding between
two cars, Darien exclaimed, "This guy's insane. He's either extremely confident or he has
a huge death wish!"
The rider of the Harley glanced down at a wristwatch. *Three and a half minutes.
Damn - red light!* The two riders were forced to pull up at the traffic lights. At the front of
the queue, in adjacent lanes, the two motorbike riders glanced at each other. Darien stared,
trying to see the mysterious rider's face. "That's weird," he noticed. "I could swear his eyes
are changing colour." Darien watched as eyes filled with mischief and challenge altered
from almost black to a pale colour and back to dark. Revving the engine, the other rider
seemed incredibly amused.
"So, you want a race?" Darien observed, turned his attention back to the lights, as
the crossing flow of traffic slowed, and came to a halt. *Green light!* Engines roaring,
two motorcycles raced down the street, vying with each other for the lead. Leaning to the
right, Darien almost skidded out trying to round the corner. The other rider had no such
trouble, jumping the curb to shortcut across the corner of the sidewalk before moving back
onto the road.
Spying the Azabu Institute of Technology up ahead, Darien checked his watch.
"One and a half minutes. I don't believe it," he breathed. "I'm going to make it on time after
all." He put on an extra burst of speed, pulling ahead of the other rider. He had to slow
down slightly as he approached the turn off to the parking lot, which was surrounded by a
neatly trimmed garden hedge.
The other rider grinned as Darien pulled ahead, but then slowed down. Checking
out the turn, and the hedge, the smile only widened. "When did I ever do things the
expected way?" Angling the motorcycle, the rider jumped up onto the curb again and headed
straight for the hedge. At the last second the rider stunt-jumped.
Darien could only stare in disbelief as the motorcycle flew through the air, the tyres
only clearing the top of hedge by an inch. Landing heavily in front of Darien, the motorbike
went into a skid, leaning back to the right, so that the rider was forced to use his feet to
stop the bike from skidding out. Straightening the bike, the rider leaned heavily for a second
on the handlebars, then looked up at Darien, who had still to enter the parking lot. "Guess this
means I won?" a voice muffled by the helmet asked.
"Guess so," Darien agreed, still in a daze.
"Cool," the rider laughed, and reached up to remove the heavy motorcycle helmet. A
flame red braid spilled out, and pale violet eyes twinkled through thick locks of hair framing
 the rider's face.
	"Y-you're a girl," Darien stuttered.
"So glad you noticed,"Ari laughed, striking a mock flirtatious pose and batting her
long eyelashes.
	*Riiinnng* *Riiinnng*
"What's that?" Ari asked, wrinkling her nose.
"Hmm? Oh, that's the tardy bell. We better get to class or we'll be locked out,"
Darien informed her. "Didn't they have one at your old university?" he inquired, as he
quickly parked his bike and headed towards the school.
"My old uni was in America," Ari explained. "And no, they're not quite that
barbaric there!" she joked. "My name's Ariana, but please call me Ari."
Darien smiled. "Darien Shields. So you're American?"
	"No. I just lived there."
Darien glanced sideways at Ari, unable to tell if she was joking or not.
"I'll explain later," she sighed, waving the unspoken question away. "Meanwhile,"
she added, checking a piece of paper containing her schedule, "do you know where room
162 is?"
"Yeah," Darien replied, shocked. "That's where I'm headed - physics."
"Cool," Ari grinned. Maybe school wouldn't be so bad after all....

End of Chapter 1.

Where is Ari really from? What is she doing at school? How will Michael react when he
finds out? And what are these new negacreeps up to? For answers to these and more, check
