The village is graced with the beauty of two natural wetland areas, Lyman Woods and Belmont Prairie. These areas are home to a few endangered species of wildlife within Illinois, and preservation of their environments have become a major concern for citizens of the village. People are able to enjoy both areas directly, through miles of hiking trails that wind throughout them. Collectively, layman and professionals have worked together to preserve the wetlands, further displaying the teamwork that exists among the villagers.
Annually, Downers Grove holds the Heritage Fest, during the weekend prior to the Fourth of July. The temperature is usually in the high 90's during the Fest, but it doesn't stop the crowds from attending. This year, festival planners included "showers" for people to use for a quick cooling off during the day.
What can you find at the Fest? Seven stages, providing non-stop music for every taste. A carnival with rides that take the breath away from even the most daring enthusiasts. Free matinee movies at the theater. An arts and crafts fair in the park, displaying the work of local artisans. A street fair, introducing you to local vendors, organizations and activities. Every type of food you can think of. A combined all denominational service in the park on Sunday. And contagious smiles and laughter, brightening the sky and pouring rays of sunlight onto every person they shine upon.
