TERRA COTTA ANGEL

Supplies needed:
2.5" terra cotta pot 3" styrofoam ball Small Silk Flowers Drill
2" terra cotta pot Old Nylon Gold Pipe Cleaner Pencil
1" terra cotta pot Raffia Scissors Glue
Thick twine Curly Hair Straight Pins Marker

1. Cut a length of twine approximately 16" in length. Tie a knot in one end of the twine, then thread the twine through the drain hole in the 1" terra cotta pot (from the inside to the outside.) Make sure that the knot stays securely inside of the pot.
Tie another knot in the twine, about 3-4" above the bottom of the pot. Thread the twine through the drain hole in the 2" terra cotta pot, in the same manner as you did for the 1" pot.
Tie another knot, again about 3-4" above the drain hole of the 2" pot, and thread the loose end through the drain hole of the 3" pot.

2. Drill a hole through the center of the styrofoam ball. Cut a piece about 5" square from an old nylon and stretch it over the ball. Secure the nylon at the "back" of the ball using the straight pins. Use a pencil to poke through the nylons, to the holes that have been drilled through the ball. Thread the twine through the styrofoam ball. Don't worry that the back of the ball looks clumpy. It will be covered with hair soon.

3. Loop several strands of raffia together and tie in the center. Separate the strands and fluff them out, to make them willowy like wings. Attach the wings to the back of the 3" terra cotta pot. Hot glue works best for this, since it will dry and secure quickly.
Note: There are a variety of shades of raffia available. You may want to select a hue that will compliment the flowers that you have selected.

4. Cut locks of the curly hair to the length you wish your angel to have, then attach the curly hair to the top, sides and back of the styrofoam ball, using glue. Hot glue is not recommended for this step, because the heat will melt the nylon and styrofoam ball, in addition to the possibility of burns, from glue that seeps through the hair as you are arranging it on the ball.

5. Trim the stems from the silk flowers close to the base of the buds. Glue the flowers along the base of each of the terra cotta pots.
Alternate ideas: In place of flowers, you can use small flowers included in potpourri, to give your angel a heavenly aroma. For the natural angel, use tiny pinecones. Small printed ribbons of lace add a more feminine twist to your angel.

6. Using markers, draw eyes and mouth on the face of the angel, following the placement as noted to the right.
If you wish for your angel to blush, use a dot of cream blush on each cheek and rub in gently.
Now is a good time to add any additional adornments to your angel, such at a small pearl necklace around the neck, or a bow under her chin.

7. Cut the pipe cleaner in half. Form one of the halves into a halo, leaving a tail of about 1". Poke the tail of the pipe cleaner into the top of the styrofoam ball, slightly behind the hole that you drilled into it. Run the loose end of the twine through the center of the halo. Make a loop at the end of the twine to form a hanger.
