America, by Neil Diamond

The White House has been the official residence of the President of the United States since 1800. The building was designed by James Hoban, an The White Housearchitect of Irish-American descent. Benjamin Latrobe, the principal architect of the Capitol, offered plans for porticos to be added to the north and south wings of the building. After the White House was destroyed by fire from British troops in 1814, Hoban reconstructed it, and included the porticos. In 1948, it was determined that the interior structure was unsound, so it was gutted and reconstructed. Since 1961, the First Ladies have taken it upon themselves to contribute in the refurbishing of the interior.

One of the newest additions to the National Mall is the Viet Nam Veteran's Viet Nam Veteran's MemorialMemorial. The memorial was dedicated in November of 1982, by President Ronald Reagan. Over 1,4000 entries were submitted for consideration for the design of the memorial. Maya Ying Lin, a Yale University architecture student was awarded the design honor. The v-shaped structure is comprised of two 250 feet slabs of granite that slope from the Viet Nam Veterans Statueground to a height of ten feet. Inscribed on the deep black stone are the names of over 58,000 men and woman that perished during the Viet Nam War. The non-traditional appearance of the memorial raised controversy. To settle the unrest that arose, a more traditional statue of three serviceman was placed off to the side. More recently, a statue, honoring females veterans, was placed on the grounds.

The Thomas Jefferson Memorial is one of the most picturesque landmarks in Washington DC. It was constructed and dedicated in 1942, marking the Thomas Jefferson Memorial200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth. The circular, simple, white marble monument is located on the south side of the Tidal Basin, surrounding by a aromatic array of Cherry blossom trees. A 19 foot bronze statue of Jefferson sits in the center of the monument, upon a six foot pedestal. Panels on the monument are inscribed with excerpts from some of Jefferson's writing, most notably his self description "I have sworn upon the alter of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man."
