~Everyone Wants A Little Piece~
~By: Rene~
It was that time again, Thanksgiving. How was Asia gonna gonna get a turkey? It was the day before and still had no turkey. "Boys!" Asia yelled. "I need ya'll to get me a turkey." "From where?" Dan asked. "I don't know, anywhere, I just need ya to find me one, and where is Nick?" Asia paced back and forth. "Go find Nick and get me a turkey!" Asia demanded. Taking a deep breath, Asia began planning what she was going to fix, while the boys left to find Nick and a turkey.
"Morning, boys." Nick said as he came from the barn. "Morning Nick." "So what are ya'll up too?" Nick asked. "Well, we gotta find a turkey, and fast or Asia will have our hide!" Nick laughed. "Ok, let me just finish up here, and we can go find us one." "Ok, Nick," the boys replied.
Jo came down the stairs in the kitchen, "morning Asia," Jo said with a smile. Asia began mumbling to herself. "You ok, Asia?" Jo asked." Asia placed her hands on hips and took a deep breath, "Well I'll be fine just as soon as they get me a turkey." "Oh," Jo chuckled, "well I'm sure they'll find one." "Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I still don't have one, they better find me one." Asia said in an angry voice.
Out in the barn, Nick finished up and they headed out in search for Asia's turkey. "Alright boys, let's find Asia her turkey now."
"Ok boys, why don't we split up and, that way we may be able to get one." Nick said. "Ok, Nat, Dan, Tommy, you three go together, Emil, you other boys come with me." "Happy huntin', boys," Nick said as they split up into two groups.
They began looking everywhere, but still no luck. Lurking in the bushes, Tommy saw something, "hey, I think I hear one over there." Stopping in their tracks, they slowly moved to the area.
Meanwhile Nick and the other boys had some luck in finding one. Nick took a step closer, "yeah, I think we got ourselves a turkey." Easing in on the turkey, slowly, Nick cocked the gun back, aiming it towards the turkey. A shot was fired, 'bang!'
Dan, Nat and Tommy were having no luck. Looking in the woods, they hadn't found nothin. "Hey, Tommy, how bout you go over there," Dan said pointed towards an open area. "See you can find anything. Nat come with me."
Tommy headed that way, while Dan and Nat continued on their trek.
"What's that?" Tommy said as he heard a ruffling noise on the other side. Coming in for a closer look, he crept up, closer and closer. Moving through the bushes, Tommy yelled, "There!" As soon as he yelled he tripped, "Agh!!" and fell into a mud hole.
"Hey, Nat you hear somethin?" "Yeah, it sounded like Tommy, let's go check it out." They headed towards the sound of a voice. "Hey, Tommy, where are you?" Dan asked.
With his face down in the mud, Tommy tried to get up.
"Dan, Nat, I'm over here!" yelled Tommy, with his mouth full of mud.
Looking down at Tommy, "what happened to you?" Dan asked as Tommy rose from the mud hole, "never mind," Dan said to him.
"So, what did ya see, Tommy?" asked Dan. "I-I saw one, it was there, and well I think it was one, I don't know." "Come on, get up Tommy, we still gotta look for a turkey," said Dan.
They continued searching for one, but they were having no luck.
"Let's go see what we got boys." Nick said as they headed towards what they thought was a turkey. Walking to the area where Nick fired the shot, "I don't see it," Emil said as he looked around. "What do ya mean you don't see it, I know I got it." "Ah, Nick, I don't see it." Nick wiped the sweat with his hand on his forehead. "Well, boys, guess we better start huntin some more then."
Nick and the boys went to go see what they got, while Dan, Nat and Tommy continued to find one. "I'm tired," Tommy whined. "Would ya quit yer whinin!" Dan yelled. "Let's just go, there ain't no turkeys around here anyways, if so, their hidin on us or some else already go them." Dan turned around, "Tommy! would you quit whin, I'm gonna get a turkey, we just need to keep lookin."
They continued to trek through the woods but it wasn't looking very promising to them. "We've been out her for hours." Tommy continued whining. Dan started huffing. Tommy's whining was making Dan madder by the second.
Meanwhile Nick and the boys were having no luck either. "How much longer are we gonna stay out her, Nick?" Emil asked. "Yeah!" the other boys said. "We'll we sure ain't havin no luck, are we boys?" Nick looked at them. He was tired and he knew that the boys had to be tired, they had been walking for hours.
Both of the groups were growing tired and they knew that it didn't seem like they were gonna get lucky in finding a turkey.
"Come on, let's go." Dan said, with Tommy lagging behind. "Let's just give up Dan," said Nat. He knew that Dan didn't want to give up the search, but he was tired and Nat knew that Dan had to be just as tired as they were. Dan didn't want to admit, but he was tired, and he knew he couldn't go on anymore. "Alright, let's just go, maybe Nick had better luck than we did." They headed towards Plumfield.
Nick and the boys sat on a log, taking a breather. "Well boys, look like we didn't have much luck." "So now what?" asked Emil. "We just can't come back with no turkey." "Yeah, yer right Emil, we can't," replied Nick. "Let's wait and see if Dan and them had some luck in findin' one." Sitting on the log, they needed to rest.
Dan thought to himself while they walked towards Plumfield, 'I can't believe we didn't find one, nothin.' He was disgusted with himself. "What about Thanksgiving, we ain't gonna have a turkey, so what are we gonna eat?" Nat asked. "I don't Nat, looks like it won't be a traditional Thanksgiving," Dan said looking at Nat.
Little did they know that Dan and them were not far from behind Nick and the other boys.
"Psst, ya hear that boys?" Nick said lurking around. "Sounds like it's comin from over there Nick," Emil replied. Stopping in their tracks, they took footing and waiting to see if they could hear the noise again. Dan, Nat and Tommy came closer and closer to where Nick and them were.
With Dan leading them, suddenly Nick popped out of the bushes, "Hey!" yelled Nick. Dan jumped back, "What are yer doin?" Dan said as he dropped his gun. "Sorry," Nick replied.
"Ya'll have any luck?" asked Nick. He hoped they had at least gotten lucky in finding a turkey. Dan paused for a moment. "I don't see anything," Emil said looking for one. "Well, ya see, we almost found one, but had no luck," Dan looked down at the ground. "What about you Nick, did you have any luck in finding one?" Nat asked with hope in his eyes that he had. Nick scratched his head, "no luck boys," Nick replied.
"Great!, now what are we gonna do, we have no turkey, we got nothin." Tommy sighed.
"Guess we just better start headin back to Plumfield boys." "Try and explain this to Asia. This outta be fun," Nick chuckled.
"Wait," Nat stopped. "What is it Nat, you didn't see that turkey that Tommy claimed to see, did ya?" Dan joked. "No, but I know where we could get one." Nick turned at Nat, "you know were to get ya?" "Yeah, at Mr. Thompson's butcher shop in town, he has some turkeys." Looking at Nat, "ya know that might not be a bad idea, we gotta find one somewhere."
"How much they cost Nat?" Emil asked.
"Oh, I don't know, probably not much." Nat said. "You comin or what?"
"Let's go boys, we may not be shootin it, but we still are kind of huntin it, well kind of." Nick and them made their way towards town.
At the butcher's shop, Mr. Thompson was selling turkeys like crazy. There wasn't too many left and they didn't look much like a turkey either.
Approaching the butcher's shop, they entered inside. "Howdy," Nick said smiling. He took his hat off. They boys followed behind and
entered. "I hear ya got some turkeys, got any left?" Nick asked looking at the man, and hoping that his answer would be yes. "Why yes we do," replied Mr. Thompson. "Ya hear that boys, were saved, we got ourselves a turkey." "Yeah," replied the boys.
"Here ya go," said Mr. Thompson as he took the turkey down and placed it on the counter. Nick looked at it. "What is this?" "This is a turkey." Looking at Mr. Thompson, "this is a turkey?" Nick asked. "This is it," said Mr. Thompson. Nick paid for it and they were on their way back to Plumfield.
Reaching Plumfield's gates, they made their way towards the house. Nan, Bess and some of the other boys were playing outside.
"Hey!" Nan shouted. "There they are, their back." The children raced towards them.
Hearing the commotion outside, Jo decided to take a look to see what was going on. She opened the front door, to see Nick and the boys walking down the road. Jo made her way towards them.
"Did ya get one?" Nan asked excitedly. "Well, where is it?"
The boys looked at Nick, waiting for him to say something first. "Hey, Nick!" Jo said smiling. Seeing that no one was saying anything, Jo asked, "what is it?"
"Well........um, ya see we has a slight problem," Nick said looking at Jo. With her hands on her hips, Jo asked, "what do you mean a slight problem? Did you, or didn't you get one?"
"Oh, we got one alright, Mrs. Jo," said Tommy.
Noticing Tommy, "what happened to you?"
"I had a little problem, Mrs. Jo."
"Well, I can certainly see that, what happened?"
With their heads down, Nick begin to tell what happened. Just before he could say something, Asia came outside, to see what was going on.
"So, did ya get me a nice big one?" Asia asked, looking for her turkey.
"We got a turkey, if ya can call it that," Dam mumbled.
Standing there, with the turkey behind his back, Nick took it out of the bag to show Asia. Placing it before Asia's eyes, "this is it."
Asia squinted her eyes, looking at the turkey. "This is it!?" She asked with a puzzled look on her face. "What do you mean this is it!?" Pointing at it, "this is no turkey!"
The man at the butchers shop said it was. "Butchers shop?!" Jo looked at Nick.
"You mean to tell me you went and got this here at the butchers shop!?" Asia asked with and explanation. She folded her arms in front and waited for Nick to answer her.
"Why don't we just go inside, then we can tell ya the story."
"Hmm, well this I got to hear," Asia said as she and the others headed to go inside.
Going into the parlor, Jo took a seat beside Asia, they both looked at Nick. The children took a seat on the floor. Nick began telling the story of how they got that scrawny thing.
"Happy Thanksgiving, Asia," Jo said as she came down the stairs, "that smells so wonderful." "Good morning Jo and Happy Thanksgiving. The turkey is in, if ya wanna call it that, Asia mumbled. I'm just working on these here vegetables." Asia glanced at Jo, wondering what she was doing in her kitchen. I hope she doesn't ask to help this year, Asia thought. Last year was just awful. "Asia, is there anyting I can do for you?" Jo asked. "I think everything is under control in here, why don't you wait for your sisters to arrive." Asia did not want Jo in her kitchen. "Ok, well I'll just go see what the children are up too." Jo exited the kitchen door. Thank goodness she did not insist on helping me with this year's dinner.
"Good morning, Jo," Nick said as he tipped his hat. "Happy Thanksgiving Nick," Jo smiled. "Oh that's right it's Thanksgiving. "Happy Thanksgiving Jo, I'm gonna finish up these chores." Nick made his way to the barn, while Jo went to see what the children where up too.
"Come on, you gotta make the pile bigger," Nan pushed the boys out of the way, "like this, now that's a pile." "It ain't gonna work like that Nan," Dan said. "Well, you're just all mad, that you didn't a turkey, now we gotta eat that thing," Nan snickered. Taking steps back, she prepared to rund and jump into the pile. Just as she was getting ready too, Mrs. Jo came walking up, "Happy Thanksgiving everyone!"
"Happy Thanksgiving Mrs. Jo, they replied. "What are you all up too?" Jo looked at them, they were up to something, probably a game to see who can run, jump or throw the farthest and of course it was girls against boys.
Nan got ready to run, hiking her dress up, she took a step and gained speed, running as fast as she could, she took a big leap into the air, and landed smack in the middle. With leaves in her hair, "now that's how it's done." The boys just laughed. "Oh, Nan, just look at you, your a mess." Bess exclaimed.
Jo laughed, "alright now everyone, time to get ready for Thanksgiving dinner." "everyone has something to do to get dinner ready." The children made way for the kitchen.
Asia worked away, getting everything just right. Just then the door flew open, with the children following behind. "Hi Asia," they said as they came bolting in. "What is all this racket?" Asia said disgustedly. "Were her to help,"exclaimed Tommy. "You came to do what?" Asia asked giving them the look. "Fine, well some take the dishes and set the table, oh and Tommy maybe you should do something else that doesn't involve something that is breakable." Asia said.
Nan and Nat, set the table, while the others got the glasses and everthing else for the table.
It was time for the turkey to come out. Asia put on her mittens and pulled the turkey out. She placed it on the kitchen counter, too let it cool off some.
Tommy entered the kitchen, smelling the turkey, he just couldn't resist, with Asia's back turned, he looked to make sure she wasn't looking. As soon as he was about to sneek a piece, "Oh no you don't!" Asia turned around, with her hands on her hips, "what do you think you're doing?" Asia asked. "I-I-I was just looking at this wonderful turkey Asia." "Uh huh," Asia looked at Tommy. "Why don't you go see if there is something else you can do." Asia said.
Tommy knew there was nothing for him to do in the dining room, so he decided to go see what Nick was up too. The kitchen door flew open and Tommy exited, while Max came in following his nose. Asia had left the kitchen, to check up on the children.
Max looked around, with no one there, he decided that he wanted a little taste too. Reaching for a piece of it, he knocked it off the counter. Max was wrestling with the turkey, just as Asia entered through the kitchen, she couldn't believe her eyes. She gasphed. "My turkey!" Asia yelled. Max looked up at Asia. He had toren a good size piece of the turkey off. Asia began running after Max, she chased him around the kitchen, "Ah ha!, I got ya now!" She reached for Max and the turkey, but there was no chance of her getting him.
Max raced through the house, with the turkey, hanging from his mouth. "What was that?" Jo asked puzzled. Just then she saw Asia come flying through the house yelling, "My turkey, you get back here with that!"
The Laurences had just arrived. Amy and Laurie stepped out of the carriage. He rang the doorbell. "I'll get it," said Dan. As soon as Dan opened the front door, Max came racing out, with Asia following.
Max came running out so fast, that he almost knocked down Amy, "What in the world, was that?" Amy's eyes lit up. Asia continued running after Max and the turkey.
Jo and the children began laughing, "well, there goes Thanksgiving dinner, I hope Max enjoys it." Nan laughed.
