People With Disabilities
And Their Difficulty
Accessing The Public
Transport System

Recently, in Verne Road in North Shields, an elderly passenger in an electric wheelchair was waiting for the last bus at the Nautilus Public House (route 325). When the bus arrived, the mechanism for easy access and vehicle loading was broken. The driver did not contact operator headquarters for a taxi and fearing the passenger was about to be left at the road side.

A number of men joining the queue for the bus physically lifted the chair onto the bus and lifted it off at the other end. This raises two questions:

  1. What would have happened if those caring men had not turned up?
  2. What if the men had dropped the chair, who would have been responsible?
