Welcome to my website and thank you dearly for visiting!!! I have been an artist ever since I could hold a pencil. I used to sing, dance and even put on ' mini-plays' for my parents and friends when I was very young. My mother finally clued in when she found some coloring books of mine with the front and back pages ripped right off, and noticed that the coloring parts were left empty. Took her a little while before she figured out what I was doing with them when she found a stack of them with my own drawings on the blank sides of the torn pages!!! |
And thus...my journey into the world of art had began when she started buying me so many different things to draw with. I used to carry a set of ' Prang ' crayons in the big carrying case wherever I went. My parents have been some of my biggest supporters in art all throughout my life. My biggest pleasure was drawing people , animals and anything favoring the fantasy realm. Unicorns and mermaids were frequently found amongst my drawings. As I grew older, I found my mother to also be one of my own worst critics....she was very hard on me sometimes...but in the long run...she pushed me beyond my limits and therefore, strengthened my capabilities in perfecting my work. I also became my own worst critic and as a result...found myself with a lot of wasted paper. Throughout the years...I took a many art courses in school but found them to be lacking in the way of teaching. My teacher found that by leaving me alone in a lot of cases...he would eventually see my own art flourish instead of doing some of the same old lessons I took over and over in school. I took some extra-cirricular courses in Studio Art and Etching. I also took some post-secondary education and found myself exploring the world of classical animation (Vancouver Film School) and life drawing ( live nudes - Capilano college ) Both of them greatly enhanced my anatomy skills and also gave me some new directions to take. |
After my uncomfortable years in high school ( I was somewhat of an outsider )- about five years ago...I found an amazing friend whom of which is a miraculous Native Artist named Terrence Young. He saw me as I struggled with my art and began to teach me in the ways of the Native Culture. I couldn't stay away from him very long as I was always learning something new from him in both art and life.He became a life-long friend. A few months after I met Terrence...we embarked on a journey to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Terrence has many friends and family members in Winnipeg and I was taken upon the journey of a lifetime. I found a whole new world and a new avenue for my art. By watching him and spending time with him while he painted...I began really love what he projected in his art. Every one of his paintings told a story or had a teaching to tell. Animals in the form of spirits are a big part of his work...and I loved how he portrayed them...(they almost jumped out at you). So...I began to take on some skills and eventually began to form my own style within the world of Native Spirituality. I made some wonderful friends in Winnipeg...and then I ventured on to another city... |
After spending almost a year there and living on my own for the first time...we then decided to go off to Thunder Bay. There I met many fascinating people and found not only Winnipeg to be rich with the Native culture...but also Thunder Bay to be filled with it at every turn. I had much inspiration and began to sell my pencil, ink and charcoal drawings to a Native Cultural Center, and then later...to art galleries in both Winnipeg and Thunder Bay. I also found myself rich with some new friends whom are also the brother and sister of Terrence, and also Marianne, Q, Sandra, Mary, Shayna, and Candace. |
