Ai comes running by & bumps into him going up the bus...Ariake is in love with Kurota Chihiro, his elder brother's fiancée. Although his brother, a critically acclaimed artist has been dead 7 years, she's still in love with him...Hayakawa Ai is caught & sent to a correction facility. There she is placed in a room with four other juvenile delinquents - Matsuda Eriko, Mike Anna, Ikawa Mashiro & Suzuoka Popo. She is reticent at first, trying to run away when she gets the chance. During a meal, she causes a commotion & as Ariake tries to stop her, she begs him to go see Shu, otherwise Shu will die. He says no, but in the end, worried, goes to her apartment. He finds out that Shu is her cat & although against the rules, he starts taking care of it for her & she starts opening up to him during their counseling sessions...In the process however, Ariake finds himself telling her about himself, about how he felt growing up, being compared to his elder brother all the time... Ai, for some reason, seems to understand him perfectly...The other four girls have problems of their own. Anna seems to be under the control of one the male delinquents also in that facility, Makimura. She will do anything he says, including committing suicide...Popo keeps washing her hands & doesn't speak to anyone...Eriko gets into fights with some other girls...Mashiro has has been sexually abused by her step-father & goes for an abortion...Makimura, a very intelligent boy, has a strange hold over the rest of the boys in the facility...Kasai is put in charge of Popo & Anna. She asks Ariake to go to the movies, to the amusement park, to the beach, to have dinner...by himself, while she will be with him in her imagination. On the way back to the facility, he goes by Chihiro's apartment to meet Koizumi, director of an art gallery. He is told that while his painting is good, it's lacking something...Ariake tells Ai about the 'date' & then realizes while he's speaking to her that what he's lacking is 'imagination'. Ai tells him that if he wants to 'fly' he can, she'll help him, she'll take his hand & fly high into the sky...as he leaves, she strips, tells him to look & imagine...When Ariake visits Koimizu, he learns that his brother didn't die in an accident but killed himself. When he ran out of talent & inspiration, he couldn't live anymore. Koimizu doesn't realize that Chihiro has come by to ask him to take another look at the painting & overhears...The social worker discovers that Ai had a younger brother Shu. Ai says that she killed him...Ariake goes to see Chihiro but doesn't stay, he ends up at Ai's apartment with Shu instead. The next morning during their counseling session, when Ai says jealously that he spent the night with Chihiro, he tells her to ask Shu. He says he asked Shu why he couldn't stay with Chihiro. Ai asks if Ariake has fallen in love with her (Ai). He just stares at her & doesn't deny it...Chihiro wants to have a second chance & seems to be a little jealous of Ai. She gives a classical performance playing the flute at the correction facility. Then on another occasion, giving the excuse that she forgot something, she returns to the facility. There she meets Ai who tells her that although Ariake used to be in love with Chihiro, he now loves Ai. Chihiro moves to the TV set, grabs the wire & pulls. It smashes to the ground, with the glass bits shattering & entering her eyes...Ariake learns from Ai's former teacher Yoshioka about Ai's younger brother Shu. One day when they were out shopping, as they were walking down a slop, the bag of apples broke. One of the apples fell out & Shu went running after it. A motorbike hit Shu, & Ai just stood there watching...Yoshioka also tells Ariake that Ai is a devil with an innocent face. She wanted his past, his present & future to the point where he was afraid of her. So he left for London to get away. But he admits that although he's getting married soon, when he dies, the person he'll think about will not be his wife, but Ai... Ariake finds out what happens to Chihiro & visits her in the hospital. She tells him that Ai did was the one who did it, & he recalls Yoshioka telling him about Ai being a devil with an innocent face. He accuses Ai when he next sees her but Ai doesn't try to defend herself, instead says that it's better this way, otherwise she will only love him more & they will both break...Ariake bumps into Koizumi & learns from him that Chihiro was the one who caused her own blindness, not Ai...Ai learns from the social worked that Chihiro is now blind. She realizes that Ariake will be with Chihiro out of obligation... Eriko seizes the chance to escape from the facility & the other four go with her. She goes to look for her boyfriend but finds out that he's seeing someone else. The others try to console her & they spend the day & night together. The wardens are undecided whether to sound the alarm of their escape but Ariake says to wait until the morning, the girls would return. That night he goes to Ai's apartment to wait for her, knowing that she would come to see Shu. He apologizes & kisses her...she goes back to the other girls bring food & tells them that if they return to the facility in the morning, nothing would happen to them. They spend the night in an uncompleted building & return the next morning...Ariake decides to draw a last picture, one of Ai & Koizumi asks to see it. He tells Koizumi that he loves Ai but will stay with Chihiro out of duty, no penance, he says. He was the one who killed his brother, he tells Koizumi but doesn't explain...Makimura makes a pact with Anna to kill themselves but he's just toying with her while she actually tries to kill herself. Kasai gets upset & punches the daylights out of Makimura who ends up in the hospital. Ariake visits Makimura in the hospital & starts to get through to him. Kasai resigns...but this affects Popo who starts acting strange when another warden takes over. She gets sent to another facility. Mashiro is released but tells Ai that she's has no place to go. She returns home but is abused by her step-father. She goes to the place where the girls spent the night when they escaped & jumps off the building...Koizumi visits Chihiro & asks her if she had ever seen Ariake's brother finish his paintings. He admits that he has made a big mistake, that it is Ariake that did all the paintings, not his brother. Koimizu says he's seen the evidence, he saw the unfinished painting of Ai & it's better than anything he's ever painted for his brother...Ariake finishes the painting of Ai & tells her. He says that there was a strange feeling when he did the painting, that he was her child...he admits that when he was seven, he finished an art homework for his brother. It won an award & everyone said that his brothon the way back to her room, Kasai tells Ariake about Mashiro's suicide, not realizing that Ai is around...at the funeral, Ai suddenly goes berserk & stabs Mashiro's step-father with an umbrella. This seals her fate & she gets sent to an all girls facility. Ariake resigns. Chihiro admits to Ariake that she's ok, not blind. She realizes that it is Ai that Ariake needs to be able to 'fly'...both Eriko & Anna are allowed to go home...Ariake goes back Ai's apartment one day & Eriko is there. She's there to take Shu as Ai didn't want to leave any memories for Ariake. She gives him a letter that Ai wrote, saying that it was probably after writing that letter that she died...Ariake is devastated. In the letter Ai writes that "I know that you'll wait for me...I am the bright sun, come near me & you'll wither & burn, I will surround you with fire, that's why I'm leaving you..." Ariake mad with grief says "Ai, you don't understand, without you I have no reason for living..." & walks into the sea...A year later at the art gallery, Kasai visits Koizumi. He learns that although Ariake has become a brilliant artist, in exchange he has become mentally unstable. "On occasion, he calls the dead girl's name..." says Koizumi. Kasai says "Hayakawa Ai is still alive..." Unknown to them, Makimura overhears...Ai is released from the facility & Makimura is there to meet her. He takes her to an old church & tells her, "Save him, & you'll save yourself..." She walks into the church & sees Shu. Suddenly she turns around & stares at the wall behind her, it's a painting of her with wings, holding Ariake's hand & flying into the sky...she runs out screaming through the forest & goes to the beach.
