Kikuo writes home to tell their parents that they’re doing fine in Tokyo & not to worry about them. Yukiko’s 24th birthday is coming up & he says that she doesn’t have anyone to go on a date with even if she wanted to…(little does he know)

Back home at the inn, a man comes to see Yukiko & Kikuo’s parents, he’s from the nearby hotel. He offers them a job at the hotel & a place to stay, saying that instructions had come from the Takagi group in Tokyo with a lot of money. Both of them get angry & feel really insulted with the offer…they wonder what’s going on in Tokyo…

Kikuo goes out on a date with Hitomi while Yukiko has 2 reserved movie tickets (Four Weddings & a Funeral) for her date with Masashi. She goes to that restaurant to wait for Masashi but gets a phone call instead. He’s on the road “I won’t be able to meet with you today…company business  at the last minute…I’ll call you later tonight”. Next to him in the passenger seat is the Kanzaki girl.

Yukiko calls up her colleague Nakamura but she’s got a date & can’t go to the movie with her. Yukiko ends up going alone. When she comes out, she calls Masashi…

On a boat, Hatsue apologizes to Masashi, “Called on you suddenly, sorry, but otherwise you wouldn’t have met up with me.” Masashi replies that he’s there merely because of business relations between Takagi & Kanzaki corporations to which Hatsue says “Then you’ll continue to see me, won’t you…” Masashi’s handphone rings, (it’s Yukiko calling) but Hatsue stops him from answering it.

Yukiko remembers that Masashi had said he’d call her tonight & hurries home. However when she gets there she sees the red umbrella hanging on the door. Kikuo & Hitomi are inside about to have dinner. Hitomi asks “Where’s Yukiko?” Kikuo rather sheepishly replies “I don’t  know, it’s late, she doesn’t have a boyfriend so where can she have gone?” Hitomi continues “Even if she doesn’t have a boyfriend, there must be someone she likes” which starts Kikuo thinking about his little sister.

When they’re cleaning up, the phone rings & Hitomi answers thinking it’s Yukiko. Masashi immediately says “Sorry about today” “Hmm?” Hitomi’s surprised. Masashi asks “You’re not Yukiko?”  “You’re looking for Yukiko? She’s not back yet. Is there anything? I’ll pass the message to her when she comes home” Hitomi replies. “Oh in that case, please tell her to call me…doesn’t matter how late” “No problem, & you are?” “Takagi”  Hitomi’s shocked but she says “I’ll pass the message…” & hangs up saying to herself “it’s not possible…” Masashi on the other end stares at a photo of his dad together with Hitomi & himself.

When Hitomi leaves, she gives him a peck on the cheek & Kikuo is speachless. (I can’t believe how goofy this guy is!) He goes to the park & Yukiko is waiting on a swing. Kikuo is still holding on to his cheek & Yukiko asks “What’s wrong?” “She kissed me.” “Is that all?” Yukiko laughs. Kikuo gets all serious & asks “What do you mean “Is that all?” Yukiko replies “It’s just a kiss on the cheek, no big deal” “Oh, & you’ve got a lot of experience??” Yukiko doesn’t think & says “How old do you think I am?” before she realizes what she’s saying. She changes the subject “Did anyone call for me?” “Who’d call you?” Kikuo shoots back. “If no one called then forget it, I just asked that’s all…I’m starving…”

Back home Yukiko waits for Masashi to call with Kikuo watching her & doesn’t pass her Masashi’s message. She sneaks the phone into bed with her & keeps on waiting. Kikuo’s really being mean.

The next day at work Yukiko gets a call from her mom. Yukiko is stunned when she hears about what’s been happening back home. When her mom asks her what’s going on & who this Takagi person is, Yukiko hurriedly tells her she’ll call back later.

In the meantime, Miura comes to Masashi news of Hitomi’s whereabouts. Masashi can’t believe his sister is working at a club & is on his way out when Yukiko calls him on the handphone. “Why did you do that? People went to look for my mom & dad…did you really ask someone to do that? I didn’t tell everything to get your help…” Yukiko’s annoyed. “My parents won’t go to work at the hotel, & we’ll find a way to pay our own debts.” Masashi cuts in “I thought you’d agree to this” “Did you do this because you sympathize with me or you feel pity for me?” Yukiko gets really angry. Right then Miura walks up & Masashi abruptly says “I can’t talk now” & hangs up, leaving Yukiko in a huff.

Yukiko’s mom decides to visit Yukiko for her birthday. Meanwhile, Kikuo buys a silver chain & pendent from a stall along a street.

Masashi goes to the nightclub where Hitomi works. As he’s going in, Hitomi (coming back from buying cigarettes it looks like) sees him. She goes to the café & calls for Yukiko. She apologizes   to Yukiko & says “there’s a customer waiting for me at the club who refuses to leave”. Yukiko says “well, let’s go home” & as she opens her wallet to pay the bill, Masashi’s business card falls out. “This is the Takagi that called last night?” “He called?” Yukiko asks “Didn’t Kikuo tell you?” Yukiko shakes her head. Later on Hitomi tells her “Better to forget about him. If you can’t tell your brother about him, it’s better to forget him”

When Yukiko gets home, Kikuo is waiting for her already having found out from their mom about the Takagi offer. They both then get into a massive fight, with Kikuo saying that Masashi has lots of girlfriends & what would he want with someone like Yukiko except go to bed with her, & giving her money to get rid of her etc etc. Yukiko’s upset, & both of them end up mad, not speaking to each other. Later when Kikuo’s fallen asleep & Yukiko reaches to set her alarm clock, there’s a folded piece of paper under it. She opens it & takes out the silver chain & pendent, on the note Kikuo had written “Happy Birthday little sister…”

Masashi’s at home & listening to his answering machine. He gets a message from his ex-girlfriend “even if you can’t make it for the wedding, come for the reception…” Masashi looks rather depressed. He calls Yukiko but although both Kikuo & Yukiko are awake, neither takes the call.

Their mom arrives in Tokyo & Yukiko assures her that “Takagi & I are only friends, nothing more, he did what he did because he felt sorry for me, nothing more…”I’m not going to see him again…”

Sasaki the chauffeur hands Masashi an envelope. Masashi opens it & it’s his business card, the one that he gave to Yukiko. Sasaki passes a message “she said she won’t call you anymore & asks that you don’t call her either.” Miura (irritating fellow) just smirks.

Masashi on the way home tells Sasaki “I want to go someplace”. He stops outside his ex-girlfriend’s wedding reception & from across the street he catches her eye. Masashi sees her with her husband & feels really down.

Kikuo accompanies Hitomi to go get her stuff from Kenji’s place while Yukiko & her mom are about to have dinner when Masashi calls “I want to see you, can you come out?” With her mom listening, Yukiko merely asks “Who’s this?” “Can you come out now?” Masashi asks again. “What are you saying?” Yukiko asks “Come to my place…” “Why are you saying this?” “I want to see you.” ”You’ve been drinking”  Masashi repeats “I want you here with me.”  Yukiko asks again “Are you drunk? You can look for someone else…” to which Masashi replies “I want to see you. I don’t want to be alone today…” Yukiko starts getting a little worried & ask “Something happened? My mom’s here…” “If you can’t come then forget it, sorry” “Where are you now?” Yukiko asks, listens then hangs up. Her mom asks & Yukiko just says “colleague, helped me a lot at work…” still thinking about Masashi. “I can’t not care…” she says & her mom tells her to go to her friend. Yukiko looks at her mom & says “I’ll be right back…”

Yukiko takes a cab to Masashi’s apartment. Masashi is sitting by the fireplace when Yukiko walks in asking “What happened?” Masashi says “I didn’t think you’d really come.” Yukiko asks again, “What happened?” Masashi gets up & walks to the piano saying “I’m not as good as you think…” “What do you mean?” Yukiko doesn’t understand. Masashi then turns around, looks at her & asks “Will you stay the night with me?” Yukiko asks “What’s the matter?” & when Masashi doesn’t answer, she asks him “In your heart, do I exist? Just a bit, just a little will do…do I exist at all?” Masashi doesn’t answer & looks away. Yukiko sees the painful truth & then says “Even if I don’t  mean anything to you…doesn’t matter…today’s my 24th birthday…I agree…I’ll spend the night with you…”
