WINDOWS XP TWEAKS
REDUCING WINDOWS SIZE ON THE 4GB FLASH
- Firstly, A lot of people will tell you to use a Modified version of
Windows XP to
- reduce the size. IE, Nlite and other programs like that.
- I DO NOT suggest using a modified version of XP. You WILL end up with
- problems at a later time. Missing Components etc.
METHODS TO REDUCE WINDOWS SIZE ON THE 4GB DRIVE
- Their are MANY rubbish files left over when windows does updates or
downloads
- files. These files can be deleted.
-
- Under the WINDOWS folder you will find Folders called $xxxxxx. ALL these
Folders can be deleted.
- They are files leftover after Windows Updates. They are only needed if you
want to remove a windows
- update. So they can be removed. This can add a LOT of space back to C:\
-
- You will also find more junk files under WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files
- Leave the Folder but delete ALL the Contents. Including Sub Folders.
-
- More junk files. Delete the Download Folder under WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution
folder
INSTALL A RAM DRIVE
- Their are several advantages of installing a RAM Drive.
- You can move the Internet Cache to the RAM Drive. This makes IE run MUCH
faster
- and doesn't fill up the C: with Temporary Internet Files.
- You can move the Windows TEMP and TMP Environment variables to the RAM
DRIVE
- Also, Install 2 GB of RAM. It is VERY Cheap.
- I then setup a 512 Meg Ram Drive.
