Mot's Pyrography Projects

While I've been doing my research I've been practicing the technique of burning designs on wood. Below you'll find some of my experiments.

My first project, a Celtic-knot box, was simply a test of my ability to use the electric woodburning tool. I had never done woodburning and wanted to see if I could handle the burning stylus. I was learning to draw celtic knots at the time. I used the Celtic Knot Font because I was impatient to do something right away when I bought my burning tool. I discovered the font program on the web and think it's a very handy tool for crafters to design quick knotwork patterns. I was very pleased with my first effort at pyrography.

This box was my second attempt at Holbein's portrait of Ann of Cleves (1539.) I was experimenting with methods of transferring a design to wood. I used three different burning tips on the box to see what artistic effects each produced.

My third project was burned on a scrap of unidentified wood. It was my effort to capture the effect of flowing hair as painted by Bottecelli in "The Birth of Venus" (c. 1478-1486). I used two burning tips and found that the wood grain really fought my attempts to chisel a curved line.
