The Itch

Some people are born destined to be good at something. Others are born destined to love something. I am uncertain which of the two categories I belong to, if any. However, I could belong to both. Right now, I am suffering from the "itch" that I am sure that every motocrosser gets from time to time. Uncertain weather this "itch" is a good or bad thing to have, I must explain my dilemma.

I am away at school, which directly translates into "I am hundreds of miles away from my family, home, and any chance I have to go riding". If money was no object, I am certain that I would take one of two actions:

  1. Buy a bike to ride up here in U.S.A., then a truck to transport that bike, then buy a house to live in, keep the bike in, and park the truck outside of.
  2. Pay to fly home every week or two so that I may ride and see all of my family & most of my friends.

That would take a lot of money, which I do not have.

All dreams and fantasies aside, I really miss just waking up early on a Saturday morning, watching cartoons, eating cereal, grabbing my gear bag and heading out the door for a day of riding. One of my favorite parts is coming back home all dirty and dusty; the first thing I would do is blow my nose to get out all of the dust boogies that would accumulate during a day of fun in the dirt, and then I would be soar for the rest of the day. I enjoy the riding most of all, but that goes without mention.

The fate of any sport is first in the hands of the participants, when it has a steady field of contestants, then & only then it is passed on to the hands of spectators. Motocross in Jamaica is lacking steady participation at events. The contender field is too small. When last has there been a race meet with more than 5 racers on the track? When last has there been a race meet?

Late last year, and once again this year a few riders form Jamaica have ventured over to St. Lucia to ride and race. They have been met with some amazingly impressive tracks, which were in fact, to say the least, awe inspiring. "The jumps are huge!" All I am told is that we in Jamaica desperately need some more demanding tracks. I completely agree, we need to step up the difficulty and size of the tracks. Without bigger and better tracks, there will be no progression within or even for the sport.

So, instead of complain, we at Moto-2 Racing are going to do our best to push for a better track in Jamaica. We shall make it known that our sport is stuck in a rut without more demanding tracks. What we need is advancement, progress, and growth within motocross. Only then will our Racers improve their skills on the motorcycle. If and only if we develop, we can have a chance of being taken as seriously as the other motor sports in Jamaica.
