One of these two designs above will be Mercedes' next small coupe. Car on left takes rear from A-Class, but favourite (on right) is derived from C-Class

From an original line-up of five SLK-based designs, our spies within Mercedes tell us one of the two machines pictured above will be the future small coupe for the German giant.
The chosen one will be in production by 2000 as a rival to BMW's forthcoming Z3-based Coupe. Insiders claim that current favourite with Mercedes board members is the car pictured on the right, which has the conventional rear of a C-Class. But running it close is the car on the left, which has an A-Class derived rear end. Whichever gets the nod, the new Merc will only be a two-seater, with probably just enough room to fit a couple of golf bags and a weekend's luggage.
The car, currently called the SC - short for Station Coupe - throughout Mercedes, is likely to feature the same 193bhp, 2.3-litre supercharged engine used in the SLK. The SC will probably be given a price tag around the British Pounds 35,000 mark to allow it to be pitched as a rival to the BMW Coupe, which has already gone into production.
And by 2002, BMW's M Coupe will be targeted with a more powerful 300bhp-plus version of the SC, tweaked by famed Mercedes tuner AMG.
