Translation of an article from German weekly newspaper "Hamburger Wochenblatt"
Police in Rahlstedt:
On patrol with the star
Rahlstedt (OH) In Rahlstedt ((district of the city
of Hamburg, Germany)) there are two ways to get
hold of a Mercedes: You can work much overtime and save
very long - or you become a police officer...
The officers of the Rahlstedt police precinct 38 go on
patrol now under a good star. At Scharbeutzer Strasse recently a radio
patrol car of the type Mercedes E200 was put into service. The noble new
police car is one of 50 upper class sedans which were bought by Hamburg
police and distributed to the precincts in these days.
According to the words of the senator for the interior
the new cars were "not the cheapest but the best." The choice for Mercedes
was being made after a "tough" European tender as a police spokesman said,
in which the Stuttgart car makers could clearly stand
up against in terms of purchase price, economy, maintenance and resale
value. Five other car makers, amongst them Volkswagen, lost. From the 50
new Peterwagen ((Hamburgian expression for patrol car)) Hamburg police
bought 25 and leased the other 25. The leasing-rate which the police has
to pay every month for each patrol car according to market observers is
sensationally low. It is around DM 600,-- ((USD 315 assumed USD 1 = DM
1.90)). The Mercedes E200 has a four-cylinder inline engine with a displacemant
of 1998 ccm and 136hp. The top speed is 210km/h ((130mph)). The fuel consumption
on average is below 10 litres premium gas
(( 23,52mpg US, 28,25mpg UK)). The base model costs DM
50.428 ((USD 26.550, must exclude German VAT of 16% as the base price for
a E200 Classic is DM 59.160 incl. VAT)).
Although their chief Hartmuth Wrocklage described the
Mercedes as "optimal workplace for the police"
at least the officers of the Rahlstedt police inspection
for the time being judge a bit restrained about the new acquisition. "We
will praise it only when we`ve experienced the 200 in daily police routine"
said a female officer to Wochenblatt.
