Description

The Ford Export Lenses are Colour specific. You need to find the part number for the colour of your car. The plastic trim around each lamp is colour matched. They are the same style as the US 96 style, with an Amber strip next to the Reversing lamp.

Procedure

Disconnect the Battery, this is important when working on a car with Airbags.

Remove the Interior trim in the trunk, this will make it much easier to complete the installation.

Using the 11 mm Deep Socket, remove the 4 nuts that secure the Lens.

When trying to remove the lens, be careful as there are a couple of plastic lugs at the side. Gently pull away from the rear of the car about 3 inches, then remove the 4 bulbs. They should twist out.

Compare the US lens and the Export one, there is an additional hole ! This is where the Amber flashing bulb is to go.

Refer to the wiring diagram for your model. Ford merges the Rear Tailight, Brake and Turn Signal on the one bulb. The tricky point is that Ford merges the Brake and Turn Signal down the same wire.

To rewire the rear lamps you need to take the Brake Signal feed from the Centre Brake Light wire, it is suggested this is fed from where the wiring loom feeds up to the Tailgate, I took a feed of the loom just to the right of the Alarm Module on the side of the trunk.

Wire the new Bulb holder to the Turn Signal Wire, on a 97 Mustang, on the Drivers side, this is a Green and Orange wire. For my application I wired an additional bulb holder in parallel. This fixed the bulb from flashing too fast.

Incidentally, if you need to fit Rear Fog Lights, now would be a good time to do this.

Re-fit the Lamp back onto the car body.

REPEAT for the other side.

NOTE: The Hazard Warning lights should now Flash Amber, the Turn Signals should flash Amber.

BUT, when you brake, the amber lights will also come on. This is due to the Brake Signal being merged with the Turn Signal unit. This is located at the left of the drivers well. Where you rest your left foot.

Pull up the long plastic cover that runs the length of the door opening, this covers the wiring harness that goes to the back of the car. Remove the plastic cover by the door hinge.

This point is where most of the wiring harnesses merge!

Using the Torx Screwdriver, remove the bracket that holds a brown/black cube shaped object that has lots of wires going into the Top and coming out of the bottom. This is where the Turn and Brake signal is merged. At the bottom of the cube are two Red wires with a green stripe, I cut the one on the left. This ensured my Indicators no longer flashed whenever I brake.

Refit the cube to the bracket and replace all the trim you have removed.

Reconnect the battery.

Test all the lights work correctly.
