May 1998: FROM THE SAFARI TO THE
CONCOURS.
Motoring enthusiasts in Kenya have discussed and reviewed the
recent Safari Rally and are turning their attention to major
forthcoming events like the Ferodo Concours d’ Elegance on July 12th.
Among the entries already received for this motor vehicle beauty
contest are Iqbal Manji’s 1952 Mercedes saloon, a 26 year old Austin
Mini entered by Vitafoam Products and Motichand Shah’s 1969 Morris
Minor.
The Concours organisers are receiving strong support from sports
car owners. Anil Lakhani has entered a 1975 Triumph Spitfire and
Stephen Smith will drive a 1959 Triumph TR 3A down the judging line
at the Nairobi Racecourse on Concours day. One of Stephen Smith’s
rivals will be his son Andrew in a 1964 Mercedes 230 SL.
Regulations for the Concours and the Classic Car and Motor Cycle
Sale are available from the Bob Dewar publicity offices in Block G of
Norfolk Towers, Kijabe Street. The postal address is Box 41305
Nairobi and the telephone numbers are 333130, or 229793. The Classic
Sale is open to cars and motor cycles made in 1973, or earlier,
regardless of their condition.
"The East African" is backing the Alfa Romeo Owners Club to
attract entries from neighbouring countries and further afield. This
Nation Group Publication has donated the car and motor cycle team
prizes. Each member of the winning teams will receive a fine 49 piece
dinner set.
Vehicles on offer in the Classic Sale will range from Concours
cars and motor cycles to machines in poor condition requiring
restoration. The event will be an ideal opportunity for owners of old
cars and bikes to sell them to motoring enthusiasts.
Auto Expo (the motor trade exhibition at the Concours) is heading
for a full house. 25 of the 30 car plots have been taken and there
has also been a rush for space for trucks. Among the companies
participating in Auto Expo are Amazon Motors, D.T. Dobie, the CMC
Motors Group and Simba Colt.
