The 1,000 Mile Trial of 1900 was a demonstration to members of the public that the motor car was a practical means of long distance transport. The original trial lasted fourteen days in April-May 1900, 65 cars and tricycles took part of which 33 were of British manufacture. These included 14 Daimlers, 4 MMC's, 2 Marshalls and 2 Napiers, none of which was of entirely British design. The route started in London went to Bristol then Edinburgh via Birmingham, Manchester, Kendal and Carlisle. The return to London was via Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield and Nottingham. The Veteran Car Club of Great Britain is to undertake a re-enactment of the 1,000 mile trial between the 18th & 27th May 2000 following the original route as closely as possible. Some of the original cars will be taking part and all of the vehicles will have been manufactured before 31st December 1904. http://www.1000miletrial.com/
