The 'Red Baron' Virtual Tour

Welcome to the 'Red Baron' virtual tour. I feel that the 'J' body LeBaron's were among the most stylish vehicles of their day (inside and outside) and don't look out of place even compared to todays dramatically styled vehicles. Chrysler leads the entire automotive industry in design asthectics, a trend that began in my opinion with the 'J' bodied LeBarons.


The Driver's Seat

This shot illustrates the wrap-around cockpit interior design that was new to the 1990 model year. Previously a dated looking squared-off interior was being used. This new design is not only more pleasing to the eye, it is also more functional placing controls at angles facing toward the driver's position.

I opted for the premium cloth interior over leather. My personal preference. I find leather too hot in summer, too cold in winter and cloth has more 'cling' (helps on those circular freeway on-ramps).


Front & Center

Another personal choice I made when ordering my LeBaron was to go with the analogue instrument cluster. I just find I can interpret those big orange needles on a black background quicker and more acurately than any digital flourescent display.

By the way, if you look closely you can see a little red dot between the climate controls and the rear-defroster switch on the center console, which is the indicator led for a self installed aftermarket alarm package.

The Instrument Cluster

This shot illustrates the premium analog instrument cluster. It's divided nicely into three segments.

The oil pressure, engine temperature, charging system and fuel level gauges are grouped together on the left. I can read the Red Baron's 'vital signs' at a glance. The tachometer and turbo boost gauges are neatly arranged on the right and the speedometer is dead center.

I have found this instrument panel to be clear and easy to read. Also, rarely if ever does late evening or early morning sun glare affect the display due to the deep 'hood' over the gauges.


The 'Lace' Wheels

The 'Red Baron' rides on a set of P205/55R16 BFGoodrich Radial T/A's. The GTC models for 1991 came equipped with a 'sport' handling package which included stiffer shocks and springs, four wheel disc brakes, low profile tires, and the aluminum wheels pictured here.

Even with the beam axle rear suspension LeBarons still exhibit excellent ride and handling characteristics. Especially the GT and GTC models which could come with either the 'sport' or 'performance' handling packages.

The Power Plant

2.5L SOHC I4 Turbo-I Engine

This is where all the Red Baron's get up and go comes from. It's the 2.5L SOHC High-Torque Turbo-I engine. The high torque Turbo was only available as a powertrain option on the GTC's for 1991 and came with the A-568 5 speed manual transmission.

I remember the salesman having difficulty finding the right option codes to write up the sales contract. The 'Red Baron' was factory ordered to my specifications, which kind of makes it a one of a kind.
