A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SUBARU 360

Subaru 360's were the first line of vehicles produced by Fuji Heavy Industries, (parent company of Subaru). They were first made in 1958. The "360" designation refers to the engine size, (cc's). In Japan this also signifies the tax bracket that they fall, into. In their system smaller means cheaper, and these cars were the smallest.

The Subaru 360s were "offically" imported to the U.S. in 1968 by Malcolm Bricklin. They were not recieved with much enthusiasim. Most of them remained unsold even three years later. They were retailing for about $1,300, and I heard of one dealer that was offering 6 of them for $2,000, brand new! They came in four different body types. Two sedans - the standard which was white, and the Young, sport model, which was yellow, vans and the rarest - the pickups. There are also other types of specialized 360s that were imported privatly, some of which are owned by our members. These include convertibles, utility cars, wagons, and some one off vehicles.

Those that did buy them found parts and service hard to find, since Subaru did not import them they were not obligated to honor them.

This is the basic tenet behind the formation of this club.
