The only NEW-off-the-floor vehicle I've ever owned! Payed $1,600 cash for it. I bought this '74-750 on Wednesday afternoon the 11th. Rode it Wednesday through Thursday the 12th. Parked it on Friday the 13th. And was ready for the 500 mile checkup on Saturday the 14th! Took it home Saturday afternoon, yanked out the baffles, installed some "W" bars and case-savers and it never saw the dealership again. Learned to tune it myself, and changed the oil every 3K miles(which turned out to be almost once a month). Crashed it once (red's overload) and it earned new Borrani alloy rims. Not a lick of trouble after that (with the bike or the reds). |
Here I am doing my impression of Matt Hines. |
Learned to do wheelies ten minutes at a time before school started. Would ride to school, put my books down and practive for a few minutes each morning. Never new how many miles I had on the bike when I sold it in 1977, cuz I broke sooo many speedo cables that I stopped replacing them! Lost my license (the first time) with this bike. |
This is the FASTEST (top speed) bike I've ever owned. The motor was a 1972 with a Yashimura 820cc kit, lightened & balanced crank (kick start only), "Golden" rods, Kenny Harmon cams, Corkey Phillips 4-1 header, Tracy fiberglass body, clip-ons, rear-sets, Borrani alloy rims, dual disk, blah, blah, blah. I never had this thing up even close to top speed! I rode it about 150mph down the Key West "18 mile stretch" one morning about 2am. I was racing my buddy, who was riding a kawi-triple and I left him in the dust! This puppy was turning about 9300 of it's normal 10500rpm redline (and still climbing) when, through the blur of my tunnel vision, I saw 2 red pinpoints of light. I decided to slow down and the lights became the back of a car in about 5 seconds. I whipped around him at a leisuely 120mph and slowed a little more till my buddy caught up. Never tried to peg the speedo after that. (Should have added a tooth or 2 on the back sprocket ... eh?) |
Crashed once doing roadrace in West Palm. Bike got 12 coats of black lacquer over the booboo. |
Road this bike to Daytona 4 or 5 times before I sold her in 1984. With the 1.75gal. tank and 35mp/gal. motor, I ended up stopping at every gas station I saw. I learned 2 things from that ... 1. mount the biggest gas bag you can. (and I don't mean your ol'lady.) 2. throw those clip-ons away. Every time I see a peanut or Sportster tank, I shake my head. Give me Fat-Bobs every time! |
