Lion Rally 2003 Report
By Phil Luke
The Lion Rally is held in a farm site a 2 miles south of
the M4 J11 at a place called Grazeley just to the west
of the A33.
I, Pete Snook and his son Matthew left Weymouth
at about 11:40 and took the A31, M27, M3, and A33 route on a
piping hot Friday afternoon direct to the Rally Site.
We met
Phil Teafey already setting up his tent at the bottom of a nice
grassy field (but with some nasty potholes for the unwary).
We
made camp
and sat back in the sun to watch the other riders roll
(some quite literally) into the field.
We soon made new acquaintances and friends
and settled into familiarising ourselves with
the layout and facilities.
The toilets etc were
very clean and plentiful and the selection of food
stalls were good quality with a selection of ‘the usual’
plus things like pizzas, tortillas and even casseroles.
There were lots of stalls selling a selection of clothing,
sweets, toiletries, jewellery and plenty to look at. There
were two main large marquee’s one for the bar and entertainment
and another quiet tent.
Friday nights main entertainment were ‘High Voltage’ who were
clearly there to enjoy themselves and have a kicking time.
At one point event to the point of luring topless dancers
onto the stage. We were already ‘led astray’ earlier in the
evening by a troop of belly dancers.
Saturday started early and hot and the main priority seemed
to be finding cool shade between roasting sessions in the sun.
There were the usual rally games and even a wedding.
There was
the usual ‘bike show’ (a surprising number of standard bikes
entered) and featured some interesting bikes and trikes.
Saturday evening saw people cautiously repeating
the pattern from Friday night (Booze, Bands, Etc).
I must admit I spent most of the evening sat out on
the grass talking to new friends in the light of the
full moon.
The sound of the music from the main tent
was of a high standard but I think many people were just
chilling and enjoying the atmosphere. We set home early on
the Sunday to escape the heat of the day.
Well done and thanks to Reading MAG (and all the
other groups & Clubs that assisted them) for a
really good natured and friendly Lion rally 2003!
