Verbs are either active or passive. They are active in:

The vet checked Rex yesterday.

The vet has just examined a sick cat.

He will give Rex a shot.

They are passive in:

Rex was checked by the vet yesterday.

A sick cat has just been examined by the vet.

Rex will be given a shot.
