“Why did you take a taxi?”

“Because by the time I got to the bus station the last bus had already left.”

 

We use this tense to refer to an activity that happened before some other activity in the past.

I went to the bus stop hoping to catch the last bus, but when I arrived there I found out that my bus had left (before I arrived)
