In the movie: Christian is a writer who defies his father's wishes and moves to the Montmartre district in Paris. He meets a group of bohemians and is soon introduced to the Moulin Rouge, where he meets Satine and falls in love with her.

She meets Christian and falls in love with him, but must hide her true feelings from the Duke, who owns the rights to her and wants to keep her as his own. The only way she feels that she can become a real actress is to cooperate with the Duke (who is very powerful) even though she doesn't love him.

In the movie: Plays the painter Toulouse- Lautrec. He first introduces Christian to the Moulin Rouge and Satine, and becomes a good friend of Christian's. In order to look like the deformed Toulouse- Lautrec, he had to wear special leg and arm braces that made his limbs look shorter while filming.
