out of the overflow of my heart...
we cannot demand that love enters our lives;
it visits us in its own time and on its own terms.
we are not in control of its form - the most we can do
is to accept the gift as it is offered, and allow it to change us.
and we are changed by love.
we cannot help but be made larger by the unsolicited treasure of love.
when we are found acceptable as we are, we are freed to become more.
and it is a gift of inestimable value - to be loved
and to find that we are capable of loving in return.
to discover in ourselves the ability to open in ways we never imagined possible.
to be astonished by the capacity of our hearts.
to be humbled by the grace of acceptance.
and to know with certainty that we will never be the same as we were found.

empty me.
fill me.
break me and put me back together
in Your way.

you make me catch my breath, and yet,
with you
i breathe as never before.
you are my paradox -
simpler and more complicated than anything
i have known.

God,
if you are all-knowing
and ever-loving
God,
if you value freedom...
whose freedom is in view
when a child
feels the weight of an adult body
on his 5-year-old soul?
who is free?
the one who chooses to inflict pain?
or the one who lives
in the aftermath?
left with the chains of a choice he never made.
