This movie is just ehhh. For the guys out there who could watch any crappy action flick over and over again, this movie will be fine for you. People who are a little more picky, this movie is not worth your money. So, besides hacking there is basically nothing given about the story line in the trailers. There's a good reason for that. The plot is muddled, semi-predictable and contrived. Let me break it down for you. Jackman plays a world class hacker who just got out of prison for doing some unknown hacking job. His daughter, whom he loves very much, lives with his alcoholic wife and her porn director new husband. But because Jackman was actually in jail and the porn director has money for good lawyers, he is unable to see his daughter. Travolta is an international criminal and Berry is his sidekick girlfriend. Travolta sends Berry to convince Jackman to hack again for them. Jackman consents to a meeting and here's where the b.s. story line starts. Travolta mentions a government operation that happened years ago where companies were set up to launder money and the companies just happened to make money of their own. This wasn't anticipated so now those companies assets are worth over 9 billion and are sitting in a bank collecting interest. Travolta wants Jackman to hack into the computer of the bank and get the money out. Simple as that. Except for Travolta's motivation. As if 9 billion dollars isn't enough motivation, they throw in this cheesey concept that Travolta is doing this for the good of the U.S. His partner, a senator from Tennessee, and himself have this plot that they are going to build their own army with this money. They will then attack anyone who terrorizes the U.S. If you are a terrorist, they will hunt you down and kill you. This was completely unnecessary. I suppose the writers did it so it wouldn't be like every other bank robbing movie, but all it did was lower the integrity of the film. Next, the one thing that they show in the previews that this is about, as I said, is hacking. So, what cool terms will they throw at us? None that some idiot off the street couldn't think of. They use words like "Encrypted, Virus, Worm" and that's about as in detail as they get. Instead of showing technical aspects we just get pretty computers and close ups of Jackman going "Yeah baby!" Give me a break. This movie should get one star but it gets an extra half for a little twist (however predictable it may have been) near the end. The acting is decent, but nothing special. For the women, Jackman is good to gawk at. For the men, Hallie Berry shows a little more than her face. The action is okay but it's been done better before. And maybe
it's just me but the whole bombs strapped to chest with a hand held trigger and the bus
scene just gave me vivid flashbacks to Speed. This movie is pretty bad and the only reason
you should watch it is if you've got nothing better to do some night and you're in the
mood for action, you can rent it. |
