Republic's P-47 "Thunderbolt" was one of the toughest combat aircraft made, earning the nickname "The Jug." It was an awesome adversary in the air wars over Europe from 1942 through 1945. Fast, relatively nimble, armed with 8 heavy machine guns, and able to endure lots of punishment, the Thunderbolt was loved by its pilots and ground crews. Though one of the largest piston-engine fighters of its day, it was exceptionally maneuverable and well known for its ability to dive at extremely high speeds.
