Heavy weather precaution

From chief officer's point of view.

bullet Follow the heavy weather contingency checklist.

 

bullet Divide crews in three groups.
bullet Deck securing party: Headed by bosun.
bullet Cargo lashing, anchor securing party: Headed by senior cadet.
bullet LSA FFA and accommodation securing: Headed by third officer.
bullet Deck securing party will secure deck, including:
bullet Rigging of life line (25-30mm fiber rope).
bullet Complete weather tightness of hatches by cross wedges, side cleats, extra covers if required.
bullet Closing of all ventilators, air pipes, sounding pipes.
bullet Secure derricks, cranes.
bullet Cover cargo winches, mooring winches etc. with tarpaulins.
bullet Clear scuppers and freeing ports.
bullet Secure all loose gears on deck.
bullet Secure all booby hatch covers.
bullet Take sounding of all tanks.
bullet Cargo lashing, anchor securing party will secure/ check:
bullet Any loose lashing to be tightened.
bullet Anchor is properly lashed and secured.
bullet Sparling pipes and hawse pipes to be covered.
bullet Rope lockers are secured.
bullet LSA FFA and accommodation securing party will ensure:
bullet Life boat and life raft lashings are adequate.
bullet Pyrotechnics and LSA equipments are ready.
bullet Dead lights, port holes, accommodation doors, cabin stores are closed.
bullet Bridge is secured.
bullet I, myself will:
bullet Check stability.
bullet Reduce free surface effects.
bullet Plan a heavy weather duty routine.
bullet Tell chief cook to secure galley, crockeries and prepare for heavy weather.
bullet Report master about all the preparation.
bullet Note preparations in log book.
