Alvsin ("rapid goer" or "quick-footed") and Avakr ("early waker") are the two steeds that pull the chariot containing the sun across the sky. They are protected from the heat of the sun by the shield Svalin. Avakr ensures that the sun rises early in the day and Alvsin ensures that the sun does not stay over Midgard too long to scorch it.
