On the morning of January 14, 2003, at approximately 12:52 A.M. the Menlo Park Police Department located a stolen vehicle driving on the Bayfront Expressway, just off of Willow Rd. The stolen vehicle appeared to have several occupants. Ofc. Dixon attempted to stop the vehicle, which failed to yield to his lights and siren. A short pursuit followed, as the suspect led the Menlo Park Police into East Palo Alto. The suspect then abandoned the vehicle, and fled on foot, near the corner of Hunter and Georgetown, in East Palo Alto.

As the suspect driver fled on foot, Ofc. Dixon noticed a small child left in the vehicle by the suspect. Rather than chase after the suspect, Ofc. Dixon went to the vehicle to tend to the safety and welfare of the child. Inside the vehicle, Ofc. Dixon found not one, but two girls, who turned out to be two year old twins. The twins were left abandoned in the vehicle by the suspect. Both girls were uninjured, and both were later placed into the care of Child Protective Services.

A nightlong investigation ensued. The children's parents were located, and it was determined that they had left the girls with a friend in East Palo Alto to baby sit them. The suspect was later identified as Dwight Davis, DOB: 08-02-67, of East Palo Alto. Davis, with the permission of the children's babysitter, had taken the girls to get some food, when he was discovered by police driving them in the stolen vehicle.

Davis was arrested by Menlo Park Police officers without incident, five hours after the pursuit ended, at a relative's apartment on West Bayshore, in East Palo Alto. Davis was booked into the San Mateo County Jail, and now faces charges of two felony counts of abandoning a child under the age of fourteen, two felony counts of child endangerment, vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, evading a police officer, and resisting arrest. He was also booked for an outstanding arrest warrant.  ###
